Andy's Chippy in Bedford

Food. A decent sized medium cod, but it had been sitting in a warmer for a while and was barely warm. The batter was very greasy. The chip portion was huge, but a lot of the chips were very small and stuck together. Again, not very warm. Service. The person who served chewed constantly, seemed miserable, and was uncommunicative. At first, I thought he was mute. Maybe he didn't speak English well. We were served quickly upon arrival, but he took an age getting the fish and chips, wrapping everything up, then getting pickled onions, then putting everything in a bag. Atmosphere. It is a take away chippy, so 3* is a max anyway. None of the staff were friendly. The counters are fronted by perspex screens with rough holes cut in them for passing your cash in and your order out. Average value, unremarkable but not awful food, I won't recommend and probably won't go back. A 2 to 2.5% but I went there for food, not service or atmosphere, so 3*

I didn't like this place, they had a long time without changing the oil, they gave me some chips with a lot of OLD oil and the lady is rude and treats the customers poorly.

Best fish & chip shop in Bedford. Have been going here for over 40 years and never had a bad meal. Staff are always friendly and polite

Very good food and service was very fast but can get cramped if multiple people are ordering at 1 time.

Shows open time on a Wednesday as 11am, arrived at 11:30 to the shutters still closed, Wasted lunch break coming over.

I always pre order and pick up is quicker as they are always busy well done great food

Made a order for pineapple fritter and large chips over the phone pick order came home and my husband had one bit of fritter and it was pork which we don't eat reng then and got rudness from boss in the end she said she will give me the order and money went in all the staff was denied it and was so rude to me there was a guy and he was so rude and upset me they threatened me they not giving my money if I give them a bad review it was so bad the way they all shouting at me

Love this chippy but not taking cards which can be a problem.

Sometimes their prices change from one week to next

Food was fresh and yammi. It was not overprice. I enjoyed it.

Food quality seems to have gone drastically downhill during 2023. I'm now looking for a new chippie.

Found ourselves in need of a new chip shop after our local went considerably downhill so we got a takeaway from here last night and it was very tasty and not bad value at all! I was a bit sceptical due to a few reviews saying the cod was “more batter than fish” but the cod I had couldn’t have been further from that. It was perfectly crispy with tasty, fluffy cod in the middle. My husband had a battered sausage and saveloy and my son had a doner kebab wrap. They also loved theirs! The large chips was a huge portion which fed the 3 of us with plenty left over. We ordered and then went to wait outside as it started to get busy. There wasn’t a long wait for food and the guy even bought it outside to us which was really appreciated. £5.60 for a medium cod which was a very decent size. Wouldn’t hesitate to return!

My wife went in to pick up something for lunch! This being steak and kidney pie and chips and battered sausage and chips. Now we have used them a few times since they opened and never had a issue. But today the chips were cooked but tasted raw the sausage was horrible and the pie tasteless. I wouldn't give my dog them. What I would say is I hope the codfather are back from holiday soon Because they are the best.

Once i entered Andys Chippy they immediately pinned me down and the bouncer shook me down of all my loose change then beated me mercilessly. i only wanted a portion of chips but they made me buy the whole menu as they threatened to throw me into the deep fryer and turn me into battered cod. i was also forced to have their special horse radish and mustard sauce on my chips which had expired 20 years ago. not very nice. the chips were hot though and very tasty. once they had emptied my pockets of all my life savings they tried to eliminate me but i was able to overpower the bouncer and i called my friend Mike Gallagher and together we defeated the evil Andys Chippy Men. good atmosphere but bit smelly.

Good quality Nation's favourite food. Only one around here that does one of my favourites - Spam Fritter. Considering the price increases that all take away food outlets have had to make, still reasonably priced. Recommended...

Ordered a large haddock. Sadly the fish was cooked to a cinder. Plenty of batter!! There was more fish in a fish finger. this expensive mess was not pleasant. Does any one in this chip shop really know how to cook fish?

Like with most fish and chip shops, prices have soared, it costs £7.60 for a large cod/haddock fish in batter, and £4.50 for a large portion of chips, and £2 for a large pot of curry sauce, that's one expensive meal, if ate on your own, was half the price a year or two ago,but most shops charge the same now. They also do Kebabs, which again taste good but you won't get much change for a large one from £10.

Nice service but I thought was a bit expensive , I had large cod and chips the fish looked huge but when I opened it was all batter an hardly any fish , miles of chips though but unfortunately I can't eat too many so gave to my foxes , I will not go again purely on the cost was 12.80!

Popular local chippie, good range of food at decent prices. Might be more efficient service, chips sometimes a bit mushy. But I'll keep going there.

Great service, lovely food, only issue was certain standard items not prepared during busy times. Huge wait for a piece of Haddock was annoying but the quality was great. Also their chicken fresh is probably a lot better than what you tend to get.

Practically perfect in every way. I can't fault anything with this place, good food, squeaky clean, huge portions, lovely efficient staff.

I ordered from Andy's Chippy a few days ago, portion sizes are good and they have a good selection of foods. However, the amount of flies buzzing around the food totally put me off. I wanted salad with my food, but decided not to have it when I saw a fly walking all over the onions! It then proceeded to the lettuce container! Please sort this out, it's really unhygienic and off putting!

Found Andy's Chip shop a couple of months ago, really enjoy the food and the service. Sometimes there's a queue but they are pretty speedy, so you don't wait too long.

Really poor, massive portions but the chips were not fresh, luke-warm a complete disappointment.

Excellent service, very clean surroundings and sanitised inside often through out the day, screen dividers at the checkout. Large menu plus food is Hot and tasty, good value for your money here

This is not the closest chippy to where I live, but it is the one most likely to be open when I fancy fish and chips at an odd time of the day. The food itself is as good as any.

Reasonable fish and chips but what miserable staff! You never get a smile or a thank you, they just have a permanent dour look from taking your order to taking your money.

Picking the large chips, although they're £3.80 there is enough there for maybe 4 grown adults. The fish was good, but there wasn't much chicken. Staff were kind, would go again :)

Long waiting queues even if pre ordered. Makes no logical sense to wait in a queue if your food is already preordered and ready to collect. But wait in a queue for half an hour. Then it’s cold. 👍🏻

Went here about 10 years ago with my stepfather who grew up in bedford... Glad to see when I get married I'll be able to bring my family here. Best flaky fried fish there is. Fried mars bars were also the best, so rich and decadent!

Tasty fair square meal at a fair Square price. This fish and chip shop, I have been visiting for 40 years now and it is as good today as it was back then. One of the fairest and nicest chippys in the country, in my view. This chippy is a must try

Quality fish n chips. Chips are fried perfectly, not soggy or excessively greasy. Fish was excellent, crispy and succulent. Why only 4 stars? A standard portion of fish and chips could easily feed 2 adults, maybe a child too, so if you're watching your waistline I'd opt for a small or half portion of chips. Free parking spaces approx. 20 paces from the front door. Covid measures in plaice(!) and an excellent queuing system has you in and out in moments few.

Freshly cooked tasty fish and chips at a reasonable price. Fish cooked to order was worth waiting for, battered lightly which meant you could taste the freshness of the fish.

We have been using Andy’s now for 2 years after moving nearby and have found that without exception the fish has been excellent and particularly the batter , so many places just don’t get it right , who wants to eat craggy batter I ask you? This place is excellent, thanks to you all

Everything was overdone this evening... haven't visited for a long time but this is not how i remember the food being. However they get the queue down very quickly.
