Really great meal best Thai meal we have had for a long time. We did order ahead of time which is a great idea . We will definitely be going back.

Incredible food, attentive service and a very happy birthday was had! What an absolute gem this little pub/thai restaurant is. We cannot wait to return! Superb.

Well what can I say. My previous profession has been in the kitchens for many years, I absolutely love Thai cuisine. I have had many Thai food experiences, but must I say I have not had a selection of dishes with an abundance of flavour like you get here. The front of house service was second to none. All of the produce is of a high quality front and back of house. Me and my partner came away feeling extremely satisfied with absolutely everything. If you love thai then this is the place to come. No better thai restaurant than this within 100 miles of here. Highly recommended. Will one hundred percent be revisting.

Warm cider (no ice offered), no choice of gin and flat tonic, special sharing starter was good but overpriced, red curry was way too salty and Pad Thai was boring… worst of all drinks took 20mins to arrive, prawn crackers took 40mins to arrive and the starter took over an hour to get to us despite the fact that we had preordered the day before. Low quality main meal took and hour and a half - also that little lot was over £40 each!! we won’t be going back!! Which is a shame because the people were very nice… They tried but failed.

Delicious food, wonderful service. Prawns for starter and lamb was amazing. We had to wait a bit as Saturday night and all freshly cooked but worth the wait. We were going to walk back to the Cricketers but we were offered a lift. So friendly. Would definitely go again.

First time at Ananta last night with some friends who are regulars. Delicious authentic Thai food, friendly service from Sergio, easy to find and park, good selection of beers, wines and non-alcoholic options for me as designated driver and lovely ambience in a traditional Essex pub. All good. We'll be regulars too.

My friend and I visited Ananta on Friday evening, 12th August, at 7pm. We had pre-booked and out table was waiting for us. As it was a birthday celebration, I had pre-ordered the 'Special Selection of Starters' at £13.95 per head ....... not cheap but definitely worth it, as the taste, quality and presentation were all first class. I then had a chicken cashew stir fry with noodles and my friend had a red curry with jasmine rice - both were delicious, although after the starters I struggled to finish my main course. We ordered a Rioja white wine to accompany our meal and that came nicely chilled on a very hot evening. The service was also attentive - discreet but there when we wanted something. I would definitely return to this restaurant next time I am in the area.

We walked in without a reservation and the barman could not have been more attentive and accommodating. Food was amazing, home cooked, delicious. Will definitely come back.

Absolutely delicious food in a lovely setting, run by a friendly and attentive team. The lamb shank massaman curry was absolutely delicious but the highlight for me was the scallop ceviche which was light, zingy and beautifully balanced. There was a really good wine list as well. I can't recommend this place enough, we will definitely be planning a return visit as soon as possible.

Great food, excellent portion size, lovely staff and reasonable prices. We’d passed this place several times going to and from Saffron Walden and gave it a try. Glad we did and will certainly do so again when staying in the area.

The best Thai for miles and therefore we ignore all the others around us and drive a good few miles out for this! The starters, in particular, are phenomenal - sweetcorn cakes, satay and duck rolls are the best I’ve ever tasted and on a par with food eaten in Thailand. Great customer service and it’s no surprise they are always busy so think ahead, it’s so worth it.

Favourite restaurant in the area, great atmosphere and large choice of drinks and the food is made from scratch and from the heart! The staff do everything to ensure you have a fantastic visit and even our young nieces and nephew are not problems to feed either. Great experience and even though we will be moving from the area, we will still travel to visit and eat here. Would recommend.

Visited here with our two grown up kids to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday. Gorgeous food - kids are both veggie/vegan and there was so much choice. We pre-ordered starters and mains which was actually really nice to take time to choose and just relax on arrival. Waitresses were super nice and professional - husband touched when his truffles were brought out with birthday candles. Lots of other tables occupied and everyone commenting on the lovely food etc. Have used their food truck several times (Saffron Hall - off the beaten truck) - always fab too. Thank you Sergio & the team. We’ll be back!

We ordered food to collect from the van. The takeawy packaging was inadequate. The food was cold by the time we got it home and the curries had soaked through the packaging and leaked into the bag. Very disappointing. And most annoyingly, very easily solved by using the right packaging .Food was average, portion sizes here definitely on the mean size -- ie 6 pieces of chicken in the green curry. All in all, an experience all to true to lockdown life. Won't be using again. I have eatned in the restaurant before and had muhc more positive experiences so maybe this is an unfortunate anomaly ....

A great place to eat in a vibrant setting. The staff have passion about food and the food is delicious. We outside and there was heating which was very warm.

We hadn’t eaten out since before the first lockdown in March so we really needed a change of scenery to celebrate a birthday meal and it wasn’t a difficult decision in choosing Ananta, our favourite local restaurant. And what a great choice it was. The welcome is always warm and friendly - Sergio is wonderful and genuine front of house host and Ananta cooks and presents delicious food ...a great combination. The only difficult decision is choosing whether to go for their Thai or Tapas menu days! A beautiful old pub in a quiet, rural village with great hosts and delicious food ...what more could you ask for?

Delicious food and friendly staff - we visited Ananta for the first time tonight for my husbands birthday and had a wonderful meal. We placed our order over email beforehand which made everything more efficient. We had duck spring rolls with pad Thai and massaman beef curry, all really flavoursome and good portions. We have eaten at many Thai restaurants around the world and Ananta did not disappoint. Thank you Sergio and team!

I have eaten here a few times but never got round to leaving a review. After last nights meal however I thought it about time. The food was absolutely delicious and one of the nicest meals we have had in a long time. All the staff are lovely and we felt totally safe with the Covid measures put in place. Strongly recommend. They do takeaway food also

Lovely Thai restaurant, the food was nice and had a good flavour and spice. I actually liked ordering before we went and found by doing this it made the evening go very smoothly. The meal was timed perfectly and the service from Sergio was second to none.

We were visiting friends in the village who arranged the takeaway and I cannot compliment the food enough! The Spring Rolls were fresh, home made and very tasty. The fish cakes and satay were ok too. We shared Pad Thai and a Green Curry - both very tasty and as good as we’ve eaten in Thailand - our friend’s dish of Penang Curry stoke the show I could easily have licked the dish clean. We will be back - Thank you Sergio!

We have been going to Ananta for a few years now, as much as we can. It’s a 30 minute drive but we still go there to get take aways as their food is absolutely amazing! I have used some older photos as they are only open for take away at the moment. Nothing is too much trouble for Sergio & Ananta, the pub is so cosy & I can’t wait for it to be open again. If you love Thai food, don’t wait any longer to book in for a takeaway! We have been to Thailand a few times but Ananta is still some of the best Thai food we have tasted!

We have eaten here on many occasions and we have never been disappointed. The food has alway been authentic and delicious. All of the meals are prepared fresh and that takes a little longer to do especially when the kitchen is very busy but I can assure you the wait is well worth it. Sergio who owns the restaurant runs the front of house and he is very friendly and always wanting to please you.We ate outside last night due to Covid-19. Hand sanitiser is available on all tables and the staff were seen using it and face masks every time they delivered meals and took away the plates. They are obviously very keen to ensure the safety of their clients and staff which made us feel very safe.They also have a good selection of Gins and beers.....

A local, friendly, cosy atmosphere. This evening was topped off with carol singers and the extremely talented sous chef leading on once in royal David’s city! I took my Mother here for the first time. We had an excellent meal. Authentic flavours and wonderful presentation. We were not rushed so had the time to chat in between courses and really enjoy our time together. Thank you Sergio, Ananta and all the staff for excellent food and service!

Six of us for dinner on a couple of Saturday nights - both times - amazing food. Love the pub atmosphere in the small welcoming bar area. Friendly helpful waitresses. The food is simply stunning - gorgeous flavours - beautifully blended - thanks to Ananta. Sergio runs front of house and nothing is too much trouble. This is the second couple I have taken to Ananta and I they like me loved it - best Thai for miles and miles they claimed and they love their Thai. See you soon!

Ananta is still my favourite local restaurant and we have eaten Thai here several times – the food is always amazing and Sergio and Ananta are proper hosts that make you feel truly welcome. We have been meaning to try their Spanish Tapas menu (first Sunday of each month) for some time and finally managed to visit recently. They have a really good tapas menu and everything that we chose was cooked to perfection, tasted delicious and was beautifully presented. I know that tapas are small dishes but everything tasted so good it just left you wanting more... Sergio, you really need to find some way of offering a main-portion size of your paella! The Ananta tapas is one of only 3 that we have ever had where we felt that it was worth paying money for. We’ll be back soon.

Four or us for dinner - first time for two of them. Stunning food as always - never fails to disappoint - I had my usual of satay king prawns for starter, followed by sizzling sea bass and coconut rice. My partner the soft shell crab and lamb curry. Lovely aromatic flavours . Always made to feel welcome, all the staff friendly and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. Definitely going back!

We arrived on a wet and windy night, so was slightly bedraggled on arrival. But as soon as we entered, there was a lovely warm atmosphere and was welcomed by the friendly pub owners. Food was fresh, tasty and delicious. We will definitely be visiting again, for a second helping!

Dropped in tonight on the spur of the moment and what a wonderful place. Food utterly delicious. One of the few places who say slow cooked lamb and mean it. The slow cooked lamb Massaman curry just perfect. Sergio so charming and his staff just great. Thank you all for a truly lovely night out. If your wanting your food served fast, then McDonald’s is about ten miles away from Ananta Thai Food Pub. If however like me, you like your food cooked fresh then yes you will have to wait a while but it’s worth waiting for the food is that good. Yes Ananta Thai Food pub is intimate, but this is the charm of the place which has a really cosy atmosphere. Please remember that this place is not part of some large chain, but a family run business concentrating on customer service and above all, great fresh food

We ate there on a Saturday night so it was packed which is a good sign but it took an hour and a half to get our food, maybe 1 hour from ordering so not ideal. We did get a starter after about 45 mins at least and that was good - their sliced steak dish and would recommend.Needless to say we were pretty hungry when it arrived and sadly it was a big disappointment after hearing some great reviews. The Pad Thai was oily and lacked the delicate flavours which make it, the Green Thai chicken was ok but nothing special; the Beef and Peppers stir fry was good and would recommend that and as per the title the staff and owners are very nice but we won't rush back anytime soon.

Food passable, but tables so close together you can hear nearby conversations. Prices higher than the value of the cuisine. Better Thai restaurants in the locality.

Booked last night for 7.15 pm, took an hour to get my starter, three others I was with watched me finish mine before they got theirs, then another hour ( now 9pm) for our main course. Far far too long to wait to be fed. Staff were pleasant and food was ok but we would not go back.

After hearing good things about Ananta we planned to take our daughters aged 10 and 12 for a Thai food experience on a Saturday evening and I’m pleased to say that both the girls (and parents) loved it. The food was excellently fresh and fragrant as Thai food should be and the service very attentive. The slow cooked lamb massaman was fantastic! We also really quite liked the relaxed atmosphere in a traditional public house setting. We will definitely be back and we would not hesitate to recommend.

Why people complain about how long the food takes to arrive, baffles me. Wouldn’t these people rather their food was cooked fresh rather than just reheated microwave crap. Sorry to those people who want their food fast, I think you will find that the local McDonalds is not that very far away at Duxford services may serve you better. If you want superb freshly cooked and are prepared to wait for Thai food, then go and eat at Ananta Thai Food Pub. If you want to eat fast food, then there are plenty of ‘fast food’ joints about

Food was good but it took so so long to arrive and we were very unimpressed to say the least. It wasn’t busy but by the time the main arrived we weren’t hungry. No apologies nothing not impressed guys sort it out or you will lose customers

We always enjoy the food here and tonight was no different; unfortunately, the beers are at best mediocre.

We had a table booked a week ago for 6 of us, we chose to eat here as been previously and really enjoyed it. But was very disappointed this time with the service.

First thoughts? Absolutely stunning, the pub is 16th century? Now a Thai restaurant situated in a cute little village right next to a church. I've passed this place so many times and said I am going in, so payday seemed like a good opportunity to pop in straight after work.

Very enjoyable selection of tapas served with a smile and friendly service the Iberian pork and red pepper hummus really good will come back

I’ve raved about this place and have been a regular for a long time since moving to the area, but Friday night left a literal bad taste in my mouth. My husband and I always order the same thing - king prawn yellow curry and it’s always full of flavour and delicious but, this time, it was SO salty we couldn’t get through it. We’re both actually quite big on salt (probably too much) but this was just awful.

Exceptionally good tapas and excellent variety to choose from. Definitely recommend. Is also very popular with children.

This restaurant never disappoints me - I have reviewed it several times and here I go again. The food is simply stunning - it is packed full of beautiful aromatic flavours. Four of us dined - I had the satay king prawns which were so succulent, tender and bursting with flavour - i also had the sizzling sea bass - a very generous portion and the fish was cooked to perfection with my coconut rice I was in heaven. My guests all thoroughly enjoyed their food and we all vowed not to leave it so long before our return visit. Thank you for a delicious dinner.

Having travelled extensively it was refreshing to taste quality Thai food in an English pub. The only slight difference was that the courses were rather richer than in Thailand which is not a criticism but comment. We were a party of ten and were well looked after by the waiting staff and the food was with us in the right amount of time. The menus do not have pages of dishes so the ones offered are to a really good standard and if you want to go off menu there are many specials on the board that were well received. Definitely a place to visit.

Perhaps their usual staff were on holiday today, considering the raving reviews! All three of us were extremely disappointed. Waited 2 hours for main dish. Was given a dirty plate. My expensive "special" dish wasn't at all special (tasted too strongly of ginger and didn't have a good balance of flavours and it was far too salty). Another dish was too sweet. My son had the worst vegetable tempura we ever tasted and his noodles tasted of nothing but nut oil. My noodles were disgusting and we felt sick after trying them (they were a sticky lump and tasted vinegary). The jasmin rice was dry and didn't have any jasmine fragrance. One of us ordered 2 glasses of the same expensive wine but the second was clearly a much cheaper wine (we both tasted it and thought the same thing). I asked for water but they forgot about it. We think they had also forgotten about us. I had to ask them if they had forgotten our main dishes. No apologies and one girl admitted others were served first who had arrived after us. This was meant to be my 50th birthday celebration. So disappointing.

This is a lovely Thai restaurant. The team spend some time helping you to pick food that will best suite your palette and check again once the food gas arrived. This is all freshly cooled and it is delicious.

This is our all time favourite Thai. Staff are welcoming and friendly and the food is simply wonderful - also does a great G&T.; Suits couples, families and is a great eat spot for friends to meet up and while away a couple of hours.

Firstly, don't tell anyone about this place; it is far too good a secret to share with anyone! Unfortunately, word has spread and I recommend making a reservation. Why? Because the food is excellent, gluten-free requirements are fully understood, and the staff are lovely. Cosy, so not a good place to talk indiscreetly or to impress the next prospect (unless they are a devoted "foody")!

The Coach & Horses in Wicken Bonhunt has recently turned into a fusion / Thai restaurant, with success. It retains the "pubby" character and atmosphere, but with a very different food. We had a very nice meal, from the prawn hot and sour soup, to king prawn yellow curry, to lamb massaman, and it was all lovely. The service was a bit slow (clearly very young waitresses in learning) but I am sure they will improve very quickly! Good value, nice place.

This traditional country pub now turned into a Thai restaurant in a lovely hamlet is certainly a place to visit. It still retains all the period features with a small beamed bar area for pre dinner drinks and two separate restaurant areas that are cosy and inviting.

We love this restaurant. After travelling Thailand this is the most authentic Thai restaurant we have found in the uk. The flavours take us back there every time we visit. We have eaten here many times and have never had a bad meal ever.

It's strange that Saffron Walden and its satellite villages lack many decent restaurants, as there is certainly the demand for them.

Sadly very disappointed. We live locally and went for the first time on date night. Starter was lovely but the mains (3 different curries) were bland and tasteless. Didn't seem authentic Thai at all. Probably the chips on the menu should have been the give away. If you want pub food that is not the normal pub grub then maybe it would suit you, but if you are looking for a full of flavour Thai, then don't go. And the response when we complained was not satisfactory either. No commitment to putting it right.

Visited this restaurant tonight to celebrate my Daughters 16th Birthday. Ordered the starters and The main courses all from the Specials board. Can’t fault any of the food it was excellent. We booked for 7.30 pm and by the time we were served our main course it was approx 8.50pm , by this time we were very hungry, we ordered drinks and our meals within five minutes of sitting down. That time of the evening it was not even that busy, but did start to get busier after an hour or so. Will probably give it another try as the food was very good, just a shame about the wait

This pub holds a secret, it's the most surprisingly delicious thai restaurant I've ever been to. The menu provides plenty of options (my wife doesn't like coconut!) and my 5 year old son was also catered for with delicious chicken goujons that are not even on the menu. The owner entertained him with coin magic tricks whilst I ate a delicious king prawn green curry with rice and sides. It's making me hungry just thinking about it. If you are willing to travel and also paying for the quality (you'll have to accept you are in a pub but getting restaurant quality food) you are in for a treat. Great thai food and lovely owners.

From the welcome and introduction by the landlord to the excellent food and lovely friendly service it was all rather lovely.

It's a while since we last visited Ananta (we regard this as the best Thai food in the area) but chose to have an anniversary meal there.

If you like great family run service, outstanding Thai food, freshly prepared, and a relaxed warm atmosphere, this is the place to come. Sergio is a fantastic host and Ananta his wife a Thair chef of a quality and skill you would not dream of finding in a small Essex village. The mixed starters are a favourite, but also the the slow cooked lamb massaman curry, though some in the family prefer the beef. The other curries, yellow, red and green are all excellent. Highly recommended.

This time Ananta excelled herself in the kitchen - the food was heavenly - my sizzling Sea Bass was delicious - gorgeous aromatic flavours - piping hot - coupled with my coconut rice it was completely delightful. My partner had the sizzling venison which he described in similar terms. Friendly service, warm welcome. Food this good - I know why I keep coming back! Thank you!

We came here late on and managed to get a table...we love Thai food but find its hard to find a good authentic one - we finally have with Ananta it was superb! Food was delicious - the Tom yum soup was amazinc, never mind everything else, staff were really friendly, only slight downside was that it took quite a while to come but we accepted it was busy and they squeezed us in! We will definitely be back. Thank you.

We were recommended this restaurant by friends. It is an old pub, relatively small inside & therefore booking is essential. However, it is not hard to see why.

Our Grand daughter ,Millie , loves Thai food and as she is staying we decided to take her to a favourite place -Ananta in nearby Wicken Bonhunt ,Essex .

I visited the Ananta on a Wednesday evening with some friends. We had recommended the place to them based on previous reviews - to celebrate their wedding anniversary.Being a Wednesday, the restaurant was not particularly busy, but the Service we received was sadly very poor. Arriving on time for our table at 7.30, the starters took approximately 40 minutes to appear and the mains about another hour - when I commented on this to the manager, his immediate (and I felt well rehearsed) response was that this was "normal" as everything is fresh and cooked from scratch by his Thai wife... Well firstly I suspect with such staples as "Chicken Green curry" and "Pad Thai" the amount of preparation is relative, but in any event how does it take over an hour and a half to prepare two standard curries and stir fries? The answer I suspect lies in the fact that the restaurant also caters for takeaways, - several of which we saw being picked up as we were sitting looking at the waiting area, (we had plenty of time to do so!) and it was evident no one waited more than about 10 minutes to collect their order. We also noticed that the people around us who were evidently "locals" were served considerably more quickly than we were - Having seen other adverse comments below about unacceptable delays - from non locals (e.g "UAE expat" 14/3/17) I wonder whether all the effort in the kitchen is directed to those most likely to provide repeat business, be it takeaway or dining? In any event, over an hour and a half for a stock Thai main course is not "normal" - in Thailand the same dish would be served in minutes - and having eaten Thai food in many restaurants Worldwide, I can confidently say that this degree of delay is not at all "normal" if a restaurant is properly staffed and managed.Other points, the waitress who served us was very nice (and indeed apologised for the delay - something the Manager was apparently unable to do) - The ambience is OK - - it's a converted pub, so the decor and seating is basic. The food itself was nothing special despite the wait, the flavour was good but there was little chicken in the curry to be honest. In all it was a disappointing evening and I was embarrassed to have recommended the restaurant to our friends for their anniversary dinner.As perhaps the owner predicted - we shall not be back, and if you are not a local I would advise you to think carefully before booking!!

A great restaurant. The best Thai food in the area. Be sure to book, as it gets busy. The food is cooked fresh, so do not be in a rush. The Tamarind Duck is excellent. The take away service is also good.

Thai Restaurant in a thatched roof pub was very good. Menu has regular Thai favourites, all available to your personal heat requirements and a daily specials board with interesting alternatives.Service was friendly and relaxed. It gets very busy, so booking is recommended, and take away service is also available.Expect to pay in the region of £50 a head for 3 courses with drinks.

Fantastic Thai meal at the Coach & Horses, without question the most flavoursome and authentic tasting Thai food we've had since our Thailand honeymoon in 2005.Sergio the owner and all his waiting staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble to ensure we had an enjoyable evening. Service came with big smiles!My hat goes off to Ananta in the kitchen for producing such an amazing meal. Well done and thank you!Looking forward to returning one day.

We where invited here for a meal with friends to celebrate a birthday.What we really ended up celebrating was not only the food but also the service.We all had a great evening due to the great service and great food.My daughter is dairy intolerant and we explained this to a waitress who checked out the whole menu with the chef and fully explained what she could and couldn't have.We enjoyed it so much we booked up their Sunday Tapas afternoons events.

Visited with friends and had a fabulous relaxed meal. Food was amazing and service came with a smile. Giant king prawns with Penang curry were a real delight. I'll definitely be back.

Lovely little pub. Beautiful setting with very attentive helpful staff. Great service! . Lovely varied Thai menu. But the best of all the food was amazing, authentic and full of flavour. Cooked from fresh. The only downside was I couldn't eat it all. We will definitely be back (a lot)

Another stunning dinner. Ananta cooks beautiful, fresh, fragrant Thai that never disappoints. Satay King Prawn remain my favourite starter and Sea Bass my main. The King Prawn in Yellow Curry Sauce is one of my girlfriends favourites. I love the relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, the warm hospitality of Sergio and Ananta. The bar area keeps the 'local pub atmosphere' Will be back.

Early reservation at 5pm excellent food, fresh tasting , friendly staff and good service. Hot sizzling sea bass and king prawns were a hit.

Booking for 8.30. Long wait for drinks when we arrived, even longer wait for food (about 1.5 hours). Food was okay but not great, certainly wasn't worth the wait.Won't be going back.

Busy evening but service did not disappointment. First time visiting and found the food fresh, vibrant and very well cooked. Good generous portions so much so we couldn't finish our main course. Would recommend and will be going back despite the travel time for us. Reasonably priced as well .

Good food, lovely staff but seriously over booked. Waiting an hour for a pre booked table.Will go again - but not for the 8:30 sitting.

Been many times and great to go back after a wee break recently. As ever Sergio and the team looked after us very well and the food was spot on as well as the nice German beer!
