Had a very nice meal here for my partner's birthday. I had popped in earlier to ask that we were seated in the conservatory but was told that although I had a booking they could not say where it would be. In reality that is where we were seated in a pretty quiet evening for the restaurant. There were several items on the menu that were unavailable but that did not stop us finding things we liked.

This places looked so lovely when we walked past that we booked for the evening and we were so glad we did. We were made to feel so welcome and were sat at a brilliant table overlooking the harbour. The food was really first class, the atmosphere and decor spot on and the service warm, friendly and at just the right pace.

Seafood linguini needed seasoning but when I tried, the peppermill was empty... Catalan fish stew was nice but if you're serving shell-on prawns then a finger bowl might help? Cucumber sorbet delicious! Although there is a blazing log burner on the back wall, seated by the panoramic view glass doors on the harbourside is very cold at this time of the year. Seemed very busy with groups and couples but most arrived, ate and left while we were still eating? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt this time as it's out of season so I'll try again in the summer, hopefully better...

Wanted somewhere special for my birthday a couple of week's ago. We booked for Sunday lunch and we booked well in advance and asked for a good harbour view table. Was a bit disappointed to arrive and find the table at the back of the dining room directly in front of the wood burner (was a tad hot). That being said, the roast lunch was exceptional - we would go as far to say probably the best roast we've ever had. Restaurant is looking a little shabby around the edges (when I pulled my chair out to be seated there were crumbs/debris on the chair), a table leg being held level by a serviette and generally could do with a tidy (downstairs loo a bit shabby and the door handle is broken). I suspect after a busy summer season they will shut for maintenance. We would recommend and would return - just needs some slight improvements. Food cannot be faulted and staff were lovely.

Lose 1 star I'm afraid for cleaning. Youngsters ( who are most staff in these places) just don't know how to clean. Table had food/ sauce stains that I cleaned off myself with a hand wipe. Floor under table had bits of food spillages . I saw waitress ' clean' a table and just sprayed and wiped top, pushed bits of food onto floor and no sweeping it up!!! Sides of tables need wiping too and a tall dustpan and brush to clear floor under and around tables. Get cleaning right and this place is pretty perfect.

I ordered caught fish of the day (hake) with potatoes and samphire. The fish was ok though the skin was a little on the slimy side. The potatoes, though, were hard and tasteless. I sent the dish back. The second dish arrived with a shrunken hake portion and potatoes with a marginal improvement, though the size of the portion overall did not warrant £24. You decide for yourselves ...

quite brilliant restaurant with great fish and seafood options overlooking the harbour at Porthleven. I started with the shellfish bisque which was tasty but the only imperfection, there was a tad too much chilli which slightly obscured the flavours of shellfish. For mains I had the Porthleven fish (see picture) and this was one of the best things I’ve eaten in a long while, better than the turbot at the two Michelin star Hand and Flowers in Marlow. Superbly seasoned and every aspect of the dish was cooked the perfection. So good was the fish, that I had the Cornish scallops to follow and again, cooked to perfection with the creamy scallops popping in my mouth, beautifully contrasted with the spicy chorizo. I then had the creme Catalan for desert. The rhubarb was delicious and the crunchy, caramelised topping also great. If I was staying longer in the area, I think I’d eat here every evening!

Arrived on time and shown to table by pleasant front of house staff. Ordered a bottle of wine and after that had arrived ordered our starters and mains. The very pleasant scallop starter arrived quite promptly, and was very nice. Sourdough bread to mop up the creamy sauce. All good so far. And then the wait. And the wait. And the wait. Nearly an hour before some complimentary olives provided some respite from the dreadful level of service from the kitchen. Another 10 minutes or so before the mains finally arrived. Trio of fish with "roasted" new potatoes and buttered green beans, with a cream sauce and samphire. Two hot plates delivered by one waitress, only fish and veg present, so assumed the sauce would arrive prontissimo! After a few minutes with no sauce in sight, we asked for the sauce. "Oh! So sorry". Whilst the sauce was being made we complained, and refused to pay for the main, but happy to pay for the scallops and wine of course. Finally the sauce arrived and we said... clearly we wouldn't eat it as we weren't paying for it, though the waitress did say we were free to eat it. We chose not to, paid and left. Actually, the fish all looked a little worse for wear, certainly overcooked, or left waiting for too long. Didn't try it, so relying on appearance. Felt so sorry for the front of house staff......not their fault. Perhaps the chefs could come out and face the customers when the service is so appalling. Won't be going back.

Always best to book. I'm sure on less busy periods they'll do walks in. Menu is not run of the mill. Unusual ingredients and presentations. Excellent fish selections. Deep fried olives as the maitre d' said, "eat them and it'll change your life." They will accommodate intolerances or tell you if they can't. Good wines and pression beers. If unsure of anything on the menu, then ask. Mot cheap, but very good value for money.

14 years after going here and having a mediocre meal we decided to try again. Wish we hadn’t bothered. The main issue here is the atmosphere; there just isn’t one. Food is not great, over priced for what it is. Not sure how this place survives, but well done for still being a going concern when other places have gone. Think the location has a lot to do with it. Sorry this is a low score but we were disappointed on our latest visit, (We are local). We had gone especially for their fig desert which is usually lovely, this time however it was very obviously a different chef as it was not only half the size but nowhere near as nicely presented or tasty. Lovely restaurant in Porthleven serving Italian food with a Cornish seafood twist. The seafood linguine was standout, mackerel starter also very good. We went in the off-season and it was still busy so it’s well worth booking ahead. Porthleven harbour looked great at nighttime, lit up with multicolour lights. Couple of things letting it down from 5 stars: one main was a little cold when it came out and the atmosphere could have done with a bit of something.

A warm and friendly approach from original booking to the conclusion of the meal. We were all made to feel very welcome including the dogs. The staff were amazing and very efficient. The food was delightful, served promptly and hot. As we were celebrating my mothers birthday they ensured her desert had Happy Birthday written on it and all the staff sang to her. Later on I received a phone call from the restaurant to inform me I had been overcharged. I was asked to check the bill but hadn’t but they ensured I was contacted and reimbursed. Whilst waiting in the restaurant and speaking with the team there, it was explained why there had been a slight delay on the deserts. It had been down to the team getting the wording correctly. Quality mattered and the presentation important. I believe this says a lot about a high quality establishment.

Came to the restaurant twice. Once on Saturday, the good and service was good. No complaints. Decided to come back on Sunday before we will hit the road and it was absolute disaster. 1) the waiting staff was stressed and running around like it’s a peak time. Our waitress brought us wrong starter, in the end it was swapped to correct one. 2) the main course was lovely, nothing to add and same with pistachios and cherry cheesecake! I think it was the main reason why we decided to come back. 3) the bill was incorrect, when I went to the bar counter asking to rectify it, there was no apology, I had to read out the items which we ordered. In the end we had to back again to the bar counter to pay, when I tried to explain to the waitress that the service was lacking, she got all defensive, and squeezed fake apology. We left the restaurant with a bad taste in our mouths, like we were punished for highlighting the waiting staff issue.

It was ok. The food was a little underwhelming for several reasons: 2 of us had the fish of the day and it wasn’t even warm… plus the salsa verde that came with it was a really small portion… more for decoration than to be able to enjoy the fish with. The margherita pizza may as well have been called tomato as there was barely any cheese. Finally the fritto misto was good but it was odd for the prawns to be fried in their shells and the lemons fried too. Desserts were good, as was the service.

The service was excellent with very friendly waitresses who did all they could to help and were very knowledgeable about the meals and the Ingredients. Difficult one to review. Not quite as good as ones like the nearby The Square, but a little cheaper so that's fair. The food looked lovely, not just ours but every plate that came out. Staff were friendly and professional. Portion sizes were decent and the freshness of the food was evident. I would have liked a crispier batter on our fritto misto, it was a bit..soggy, but other than that the food was very good. A few things bring it down from 5 stars in my opinion. It took a few minutes for anyone, including us, to be welcomed as the albeit pleasant waitresses seem to rely heavily on one lovely member of staff. She was onto everything, but seemed rushed off her feet. We weren't offered the nice window seats despite these being available, it seemed that those who knew the staff got priority, but maybe its just bad luck. Dogs were welcome here, they surrounded us. We like dogs, I love them, but at a nice restaurant I'm not a fan. Nowhere on the website does it make it clear this is a dog friendly restaurant. Lots of customers feeding them from their plates next to us, it just spoils the atmosphere a little. It's not a country pub. Not big issues, but not 5 stars either. Worth a look in spite of them, this has a lot to recommend it.

After visiting my home county of Cornwall in Penzance, I wanted what all Cornish men yearn for a real Cornish pasty so I bought one from a shop that has been trading for 20/30 years and what I tasted was the biggest disappointment I’ve ever had (total rubbish) disgrace to all Cornish pasties, so the next day I went into the deli called the Cornish Hen and bought another pasty and wow it was the best I’ve ever had in Cornwall so I say to all you people who visit Penzance and want the best pasty going visit the Cornish Hen in Penzance you won’t be disappointed
