Ambiente Tapas in York

Not cheap but food, ambience and service were all pretty good. Of course, could be better, especailly with offering value as compared to Spain it's 3 times more expensive for same food.

Such a shame this has gone downhill. Ambiente goodramgate has been our go to for years, in a city where there are constantly new restaurants popping up, ambiente has still always remained a favourite. Sadly not any more. The service was good, the staff were trying their best, but the food was massively lacking. It was fine, it was edible, nothing bad enough to send back, but it was all just disappointing. Pork was dry, beef cheeks not falling apart and seemed barely reheated, green beans lacking in any of the char that normally makes them delicious. Will call in for a drink for old time's sake but won't be risking another mediocre meal in the future.

We all enjoyed our meals and the food was authentic. I would recommend this restaurant as I would visit again if I was in York. Thing I didn't like was the 10% service charge added to the bill when we got it, I think that this should be explained before you order. If it was on the menu, which I don't think it was, then it should have been clearer.

This was our last night in York, and we wanted something a little different. The food is amazing and plentiful! The staff recommended having three to four plates of food each, so we decided on three, and I'm glad we did. Both of us were completely full! The sherry flight is a great accompaniment to the delicious food, and each sherry was explained to us in detail so we could pair it with the dishes. The sherry was so good that my Wife is now searching for a bottle of 'sunshine in a glass' after trying a glass before we left. A fantastic little restaurant with great food, knowledge staff and a brilliant atmosphere. Thank you.

A welcoming space with wonderful service and tapas that I would expect to find in Spain where the Spanish eat. Beautiful flavours, well balanced. We had 6 dishes between the two of us and I cannot choose the best because they were all delicious. We will return and will try their other 4 establishments. Thank you.

An excellent restaurant, food was delicious, lovely ambiance. We wanted to try the sherry but didn't have a clue. The young lad who initially served us suggested the sherry flight 3 lots of 50ml samples of 3 different sherries such a good idea. All of the staff were welcoming and friendly and knowledgable about the sherry and wine. We had a fantastic evening thank you.

The best tapas I've eaten in the UK. The food is cooked to perfection and just tastes devine. Please open a restaurant in Kent - we need you down here!

We found this restaurant online and decided to give it a try. So glad we did. Truly fabulous food! We just wish they had one near us as we were just visiting York. We would absolutely go back when we revisit.

We went on a Sunday so we’re not sure how busy it would be but we were not alone and the ambience was good. The food was super - a large selection of tapas which didn’t seem to have come out of the freezer as with some other restaurants claiming to serve tapas. Highlights for us were the mussels and the albondigas and the chicken brocheta. Good service made this a lovely dinner and we'd recommend.

From the extremely warm and friendly welcome, through to the advice on the menu and sherry pairings everything was above and beyond our expectations, but then the food came and it was stunning! Honestly this is one of the best meals we have had in a very long time. All the way through Libby our server was attentive and helpful. This was our first visit but it won’t be our last. #10/10

Came here Christmas eve for a pre panto lunch. Food was authentic and tasted great. We couldn't stop ordering dishes! Ha ha. Good recommendation of wine also from the staff. Service was friendly and warm. We'll be back soon!

We came for lunch on a cold day out in York. We were warmly welcomed, given a beautiful table and incredibly well looked after as we always are. Food for drinks, 4 veggie and 4 fish dishes plus coffee and hot chocolate was under £70. We love it here thank you team - great food and great value as always

Great food and friendly service

The food was very good but the whole experience was let down by the service. It was busy but our waitress seemed to disappear after the main dishes arrived. After requesting coffee twice and it not appearing we decided to leave. The upstairs restaurant was also quite cold. A shame really because the cooking was good. Perhaps during the week when not so busy the service may be better.

As a returning customer, my latest experience here was a not satisfying. We ordered the mixed seafood paella and the amount of sea food in the plate was quite inadequate compared with my first experience. The rice was dry and not mixed with the soup so it tasted bland. Would not come back again. We took away the rest of the dish though as we don’t want to waste the food.

Have been to both branches (Fossgate and Goodramgate) twice, I would definitely recommend going to Fossgate rather than this branch. First time at this branch, the paella was so undercooked. And the second time, the jamon iberico was SOOOO badly cut and the portion of it was so much tinier than the other branch. And the calamari was soggy and not fresh at all.. and so much more…Where’s the quality control? Will never come back to this branch again, it’s very disappointing for a Spanish food lover, no wonder the other branch is always fully booked. Service was ok tho!

Lovely restaurant in historic York - there is a large variety of tapas dishes. Particular favourites were the chorizo, green beans and tortilla. Definitely worth a visit

We walked past this place and decided to give it a try. It is very welcoming and we were told a table would be available soon and ordered drinks in the bar area. We were then shown to a massive table upstairs in the restaurant, there was a great vibe and we ordered 7 tapas which were each brought out as they were ready, this meant everything was lovely and hot. Food was delicious and full of flavour. Will definitely come back next time we visit York.

Excellent food and service. We grazed for a couple of hours on amazing food. This included 6 tapas and a drink each. We were confused at the £98 bill but paid it. Later we noticed that approximately £20 was taken in the table service and what they called tax. We just were not prepared for such expense. I haven't been put off but I will check my bill in future before paying it.

Amazing tapas and incredible service.

Had a wonderful lunch here in mid December. This is my second visit and the food and wine were fabulous. I love tapas eating it regularly in Spain so getting excellent tapas in the UK is wonderful and this is. I love the restaurant itself and we were really well looked after.

Return visit today, wanted friend to try the sherry flight. Tapas were excellent plenty of different to the norm offerings. The staff are brilliant was lovely chatting about the sherry tasting.

Have eaten here 5/6 times - it’s always consistently good. Becoming a go too whenever we’re in York. Eating area is well decorated / inviting and staff are always welcoming. Last nights tapas ( for two ) were ; bread with tomotoe Potatoes bravos Flat iron steak Chicken / chorizo skewer Meatballs Calamari Salmon / haddock fishcakes Aubgerine fritters The aubergine fritters and steak in particular were amazing. All others v good with the exception of the chicken skewer that was a bit dry and “ mean” in portion albeit tasted fine. With two soft drinks and service bill was about £60. Felt well fed for that. As is the norm with tapas food arrives as cooked -not all at once.

A brilliant accidental find as we wandered around York looking for an eatery. Excellent tapas (croquetas pescado and berenjena parmingian both highly recommended) and a most investive drinks option, with assorted flights of sherries. The menu has an extensive selection of food choices, so there is something for every palate. Service was fairly 'relaxed', but it was busy when we arrived, so I can see why. Prices are average, with a 10% discretionary service charge added to the bill. Highly recommended!

The paella was burnt, the appetisers were nice, however, the main was, for lack of a better word, decimated. The service was fine but overall our experience was a huge let down especially for a birthday celebration.

Always a must visit when visiting York, delicious food with a great range of small plates, and an unmatched sherry menu with drinks for every palate and occasion. Great staff, nice atmosphere, amazing food and drink.

Wonderful tapas and sherry bar. The almond-stuffed dates with Serrano ham were a revelation (datiles con Serrano).

Great food - some of the best vegetarian tapas that I've had. Service was less than perfect - perhaps we caught the waitress on her off day. We had to ask for water 3 times before she remembered to bring it. 10 to 15 minutes after we ordered, we were told that one of the tapas was not available. 10 minutes after that we were told that our second choice was also not available. Could have been dealt with better. We will take a chance and return for the food.

Cancelled nearby dinner at an Italian restaurant to go hear, what a terrible mistake that was. Waited 45mins for our 4 dishes, and only got these as partner went and asked where they were. 3 couple's around us came in AFTER us yet had received their food while we sat waiting. Out of the 4 dishes I'd say 3 were nice, but rhe mussels were like warm JUST . . . In fact we couldn't eat them and spoke to the waitress who was very helpful.

Everything is great about this resteraunt. The staff are very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The food is the best tapas I've had!. We had 6 to share plus delicious bread to start. The Cava is a must. We had 2 tapas from each section. I can highly reccomend.

A group of 6 for my Wife's 40th birthday. I'm sure we were not the easiest of groups because were were talking a lot, not paying attention when ordering, etc. The night was fantastic from the service, atmosphere and food. A favourite restaurant of our and last night did not disappoint. Thank you so much for helping make my wife's birthday surprise so special..

Amazing tapas, try the fried aubergines they are amazing as are all the freshly prepared dishes, lovely cosy atmosphere (sat upstairs in evening), will be returning in near future, staff very welcoming and knowledgable. Great for a cosy romantic evening meal with partner.

My husband and I went here last night (Sat) never been before. Lovely place plenty of room. It was very very busy. Took 15 minutes to get a drink. The food comes out as it’s ready which was fine. Really delicious tapas. Wasn’t keen on the meatballs because they had star anise in them and it didn’t say that on the menu. Will return we really enjoyed it.

Food was fantastic, service was good; dishes a little on the small side (with the exception of the seasonal crispy kale salad - which was devine) would be my only gripe. Great place to eat if you are on your own too; didn't feel out of place. Wine pairing with desert was nice too.

We went as part of York restaurant week. There were around 4/5 items on the resturant week menu that werent available. The food that we were able to order was really nice as always.

Simply the best tapas we have had outside Spain. The service was also first class with all staff friendly and helpful. My favourite dish was the Judías Verdes (vg) (Pan-fried green beans served with sun-dried tomato & pine nuts) and my wife loved the potatoes and chorizo. Thoroughly recommend a visit an cannot wait to return

A real highlight of our few days in York. This lovely restaurant was recommended to us by a local. Excellent food - we loved the albondigas, the croquettes and the tapas wheel was just superb, friendly staff and reasonably priced. Better than the tapas we've had in Spain!

Nice atmosphere good vegetarian choices very busy but didn’t affect the service of food quality very enjoyable

We booked this last minute and really enjoyed it, we’d booked for 8:30 but got there just before 8 and the seated us really quickly without any issue. We’d not eaten all day and my husband had ran the marathon so we were ready for a feast and definitely had one. He devoured 7 plates. Everything was delicious, the service was great, price was good. Really recommend the kale dish from the autumn specials. Thanks so much ✨

Really enjoyable dinner at Ambiente Goodramgate. We had 6 dishes between the 3 of us and enjoyed all but one - the Chicarron, which unfortunately was rather dry and tough. However, as all the other dishes were beautifully spiced and very tasty we'll definitely be returning to eat here in future. Good value and good service even though the place was full.

Delicious tapas, friendly service and excellent sangria.

We visited Ambiente Tapas with friends for dinner 6th October 23 (6 of us) and were extremely disappointed with the quality of the food served and service provided. It has been while since I have left any Trip Advisor reviews having lost interest in doing so, and I have received good and bad service over that period, however last Friday's experience was that disappointing it has led me to recover my password and write a brief review. It is worth saying Tapas and Meze are probably the groups most typical food choice when we get together. I am not going to spend ages detailing all matters but my headlines are: Food: Just seemed like a general lack of care of what was being placed on the plate/checked... at the 'pass' and served; some examples being: Patatas Brava - Menu says tripled cooked - but deep fried to a hard crisp is how most of ours were served. Chicharron, again over cooked and then coated in an overpowering level of Pimento and Salt (over salting was a theme of many dishes) making them dry. The Albondigas, were oiley, the Chorizo overly sweet, almost sugary, but probably the biggest disappointment was the Bistic. The pieces of meat served were full of sinew (couldn't cut it) and then had an overpowering level of rock salt and raw garlic. Service: Not once were we asked how our food was. The waiter asked once if we want more drinks but didn't show any interest in much else and was general absent unless delivering dishes. Dishes are expected to come out at different times and when they are ready - an expected part of the tapas eating experience, however one of our party was vegetarian (a point made when ordering) and they didn't receive any food for the first 30-mins and then all their food pretty much came towards the end of the service. The vegetarian Albondigas came a good five minutes after all everything else and when the rest of the group had finished. No questions asked when pretty much untouched dishes were left at the end. An all round disappointing experience and not a restaurant we could recommend or return to.

Visited for late lunch and the guy on front of house was friendly, welcoming and the pace was perfect… I was alone so ordered my drink, which came swiftly…. I choose three tapas dishes, gambas, mussels and potato bravas with chorizo … all were well sized and absolutely delicious…the price was reasonable for the standard and the fact I was in York city centre….a really good dining experience overall

Nice little place. Not busy for midweek lunch though didn't have 1 ingredients for particular dish they substituted but didn't lower bill. Pork Belly VERY underwhelming will not have again. Bread "too artisan" full of air holes. Some fairy lights out back would still give atmosphere but not be quite so dim.

Superb find behind the Minster so slightly away from the crowds. Early lunch. Dog friendly, we even got a table rather than sit at the bar. Great drinks choice - driving so highly recommend the non alcoholic sangria. Portions seem to be 3 off ie croquettes and meat and chorizo paella (superb) had 3 chicken portions. It’s the service that made our visit special from the welcome, explain the menu and recommendations, chatty, friendly attentive service - thank you Laura R

We had a mix of tapas, the highlights were definitely the bread and oil, ham and fried potatoes. It was busy and service was reasonable appart from trying to charge us for a sharing platter we hadn't ordered or eaten. The mistake was quickly sorted but it's a reminder to check the bill. We were seated near the bar, the door was propped open and despite asking if it could be shut as it was quite cold, it was closed briefly before another member of staff opened it again. This definitely affected our enjoyment of the evening.

What a lovely cozy restaurant. We had the most fantastic meal on Saturday and couldn't fault the food or staff. Prices were very fair, quality of food was very good and we loved the atmosphere. The decor and lay out of the restaurant is right up our street. This was our 2nd visit and it certainly won't be our last. Thanks again guys, We'll be back again soon.

I booked this place for my fiends and I who were away on a girly weekend after researching on here we were not disappointed . There food was absolutely brilliant tasty and fresh the tapas can as they were ready which was perfect . The service was brilliant and the staff knowledgable .will most defiantly revisit and totally recommend .

Visited restaurant during our annual trip with friends.. food was lovely but let down by bad timing of delivering each course and last two dishes arrived when ready to pay bill. Love this restaurant but was a bit disappointed this time round

Hidden gem. I found this online after looking at a few places and liked it because it seemed a more local place and not a chain. The staff was very chatty and friendly. The food was great, and everyone enjoyed with no issues or gripes. The table location was ideal on a hot day being in front of the wall mounted air-con. I loved it, others not so much after a while we asked for it to be lowered in speed not to stop other's e joying the bliss. Thanks for a memorable visit.

This place is just a perfect 10 in every way. I'm vegetarian and I was in heaven! Such a great selection of food and wine that was mouth watering good and the staff are incredibly attentive and accommodating. Great cosy and warm atmosphere. LOVE this place!

Спустя 4 часа все ещё чувствую дискомфорт. Не знаю в чем причина, подозреваю, что в chicken kebab, вкус мяса и соуса был странный. Сервис - ставлю 3*, мы слишком долго ждали чтобы сделать заказ и получили свою воду только после напоминания. В ресторане было очень мало клиентов для такого медленного обслуживания.

We arrived quite late into the evening without a reservation for 2. Kris/Chris C was absolutely incredible, she was so friendly and made us feel so comfortable and not at all rushed. She gave us great recommendations and was so patient with other customers who were (quite frankly) vile. I will definitely be returning

Delicious tapas, excellent quality produce (you could tell from the oils, bread, ham etc)- I even ordered a second portion of gambas they were so lovely! And our waiter recommended what was a fantastic bottle of rioja, busy unpretentious atmosphere-quick efficient service- I'll definitely go back when next visiting York.

First visit and definitely a must return venue. Very friendly staff took our order for a refreshing drink followed by a 'how it works' with regards to ordering. Food was absolutely delicious and will definitely recommend to anyone. We even tried the 3 sherry samples for a bargain price. Lovely to sit and eat in a great location just watching the world go by 🙂

Excellent Tapas, we came here as the branch in Fossgate doesn't allow dogs (but the food there was excellent too). Wish there was a branch in Newcastle!

It was recommended to us and overall we weren't disappointed. The food was really nice and the staff made various efforts to meet our dietary requirements. My only issue was the seating. We had a small table in the bar area facing a wall outside with limited room on their table for 3 people eating. This meant drinks had to be moved back & forth onto the window sill. But overall, a different experience that we enjoyed that I would recommend to others.

Having previously visited Tabanco by Ambiente we knew what kind of food to expect, and we weren't disappointed! Can highly recommend the haddock croquettes and the fried aubergine, and the rosè Sangria was so refreshing on a warm evening.
