Amanzi in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

We went to Amanzi during our recent trip to Falmouth based on the other great reviews and were not disappointed. The meal was excellent from the interesting beers and extensive menu. We had the ribs and Espetada both delicious. Thoroughly recommend!

We were in Cornwall for a week and we were intrigued by the South African cuisine.Hands down one of the best meals we ate the whole trip. The only regret we have is that we couldn't go more than once.We got ribs, oustrich, and the curry.All were mouthwateringly delicious and very generous portions.Also excellent selection of gluten free meals, and they were very friendly towards coeliacs. They came to us and took their time to explain the safe options.

Biltong was nice, as was the variety of fish on the seafood platter. However the sauce was quite creamy and over powering, and not very flavoursome. Also we felt like some of the tables were too close together and it felt a bit too compact. We chose to come here following the great reviews and although there was nothing particularly wrong with the restaurant, we felt it was quite average on the whole and wouldn’t rush back - sorry!

We’ve just had an outstanding meal, best meal of the week by far, service was as good as the food, highly recommend the seafood platter, and the hake....oh and the ribs!!

This place was an unexpected delight! My husband lived in South Africa for 2 years and absolutely loved the food. He had the ostrich and I had ribs. Such delicious food. They seated us out back on the patio right away with no reservation on a holiday weekend. I love that they keep some seats for passers by. Service was excellent and the owner was lovely and welcoming. And from South Africa herself. The desserts were great and the food was true to the South African cuisine. But with more flair. Loved it.

Dinner for two. Had the lemon sole catch of the day. Absolutely beautiful and super tasty. Fast and really friendly service. Beautifully presented. Would 100% recommend and would be back in a heartbeat if I was ever anywhere close.

We had lunch this week, as a late walk-in with no booking, after many months of being locked down. We were made to feel so welcome by the very friendly and attentive staff. The four of us all had an excellent lunch, consisting of starters and main courses. The menu is varied and interesting with a good range of vegetarian and vegan options. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others.

Amanzi is our absolute favourite restaurant in Falmouth.Well worth a visit. The chefs Ian and Garth are fantastic the food is wonderfully prepared and always deliciousCarolyn and Tamsin in front of house are friendly and efficient nothing is too much troubleI had the catch of the day which is served with the best chips ever and their delicious lemon sauce. My husband had the espetada also served with chips. Presented beautifully on a hanging skewer. A mixture of Africa and Cornwall makes this restaurant a little gem

Wow this place is amazing! The food is tasty, the cocktails wonderful and the service attentive. Everything was superb and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Thank goodness our son has chosen it for his birthday meal next month. If you haven't been you really should.

My wife and me visited Amanzi the first night after many months of lockdown. Needless to say the staff were so pleased to be open again as were we to be able to go to a restaurant inside for the first time this year.We chose Amanzi because we have strong South African links and wanted something different from the ordinary. Peri peri prawns were followed by fish of the day for my wife whilst I went for traditional SA Bobotie. Both were excellent, washed down with SA wine and Castle Lager. Well done Carolyn and the team and good luck for a successful summer season.

This place is good for food. Very friendly staff. Recommend a visit. Needs more lights inside quite dark. Dog friendly thanks again Amanzi

We had a very warm welcome into a wonderful South African atmosphere. The food and drinks were great, and the portions were very generous. Caroline was a lovely host and we are already planning our next visit!

Caroline the owner is an excellent hostess and immediately made us feel very welcome. The cocktails are great, I can highly recommend the espresso martini with amarula ( a South African liquor). I had the half ribs and my husband had the Espetada: Marinated, char-grilled rump cubes on a skewer with peppers and shallots, served with chunky chips and garlic butter.... wow just wow !!! The service and food were just excellent and we are already planning our next visit!! Thanks x

Omg! Well it was a risk taking my meat and two veg dad! But well worth it! Dad throughly enjoyed his hake and the veg curry I had was amazing, not only in the presentation but the flavours were fabulous. The dessert was sooo scrumpy . We were so impressed we’ve booked to go back on Friday .....Fantastic!!

Had dinner here late September - excellent South African-inspired menu together with Southern African beers and wines. Great service, nice atmosphere and reasonable prices - the Boboti was spectacular. One of the best meals we had in Falmouth - very highly recommended.

Managed to get a table mid afternoon, the evening service was fully booked. The themed decor aside, this is a little peach of a restaurant . Friendly helpful staff, offer a good selection of soul warming dishes in the tight little roads of Falmouth. It offers South African cuisine with some Cornish twists. A small, but very appetising menu. Well worth a visit

Outstanding food. Look no further if you're after amazing food. Lovely staff, lovely atmosphere. Absolutely faultless. Great selection of drinks and everything is very reasonably priced. One of the best eats in Falmouth ❤️

Amazing African Experience!Fantastic evening in a quirky, fun restaurant.The cocktails were presented well & the Rosè wine is delicious.I had the Hake which was one of the best I’ve had, my friends had Ostrich kebab served on a hot skewers & the seafood platter that was so full of fresh fish that we all ended up having some.The staff were friendly & we felt very comfortable & safe as all the covid government guidelines were in place, even a bottle of sanitiser on every table.We look forward to returning again soon.

Visited for an evening meal with friends, great decor to fit the SA theme, comfortable seating with acceptable social distancing. Service was prompt and efficient, staff friendly. Food choice was really good, I thoroughly enjoyed the hanging kebab with peppers, all of our party enjoyed their meals. Highly recommended.

The food was delicious, the service fantastic and the atmosphere inside was warm and vibrant. I requested to have the fish platter with no dairy, they were great. The chef battered my calamari separately and gave me an entirely different sauce to what was on the menu. Super impressed with how accommodating they were of the no dairy. The food tasted gorgeous and cost no where near what they could be charging. Highly recommended

Unexpectedly one of our best meals! We booked on a recommendation - they had to turn away so many people when we were there so make sure you book before you go. Food was delicious, by far the best food we ate in Falmouth.

To find a Southern Africa restaurant in Falmouth was a surprise; to experience it so well was astonishing. Whole swathes of genuine dishes, not just the wonderful Bibouti, but kebabs and curries, also the drinks menu - they must import speciallY?Interesting ambience, even in the loos!High;y recommended

We booked a table midweek and were grateful as numerous people were turned away even though it was relatively early. The menu is unusual in that it contains South African dishes not often seen and with the emphasis on meat which might not suit everyone. Our meals were delicious, served in style and were substantial. No room for dessert unfortunately. Service friendly throughout - would definitely recommend.

One of the best meals we have had in our lives! Every course was absolutely delicious. We had the calamari, fillet, ostrich and mud pie. All were 10/10 and then there were the chips........! Just how do they cook them to taste sooo good. Excellent service on top and a nice selection of SA wines. We will be back.

Hi All!My wife and I visited Amanzi whilst on a break in Falmouth. The restaurant was fully booked for the evening but the owner managed to squeeze us in at the back terrace. Fantastic view of the harbour.We both enjoyed the peri peri prawns followed by the butternut squash and puy lentil curry. Spicy but freshly cooked and full of flavour!The sticky toffee pudding was a wonderful end to the meal.Great staff, great cocktails and great food! Go and try!Thanks.

My husband and I were recommended by a local taxi driver to try and get a table at Amanzi. We were lucky to get one (as we walked past) for 2 on 24/8/2020. The food was delicious, we had biltong, bread, ribs, ostrich, and cocktails. The service was excellent the food was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

Sheltering from storm Francis, we chose Amanzi for a bit of shelter and good food. What an inspired choice! Genuine South African food and wine beautifully cooked and presented. Between the 8 of us we tried most things on the menu with much swapping of dishes. No one had a bad word to say for anything. This was matched by great service from our waitress (hope your finger is getting better!). Next time we are in Falmouth this is a definite destination.

Great restaurant with unusual mains. Served by a delightful young part time waitress, who was so polite and helpful.Luckily we had booked in advance as whole resort packed . I had the steak on a skewer / delicious. Friend had the Hake - also delicious . Would thoroughly recommend-although Quite pricey but you get what you pay for here.

Such a delightful little restaurant, superb food and the most wonderfully friendly service. I chose the Ostrich as my main and can highly recommend this dish. My husband chose a prawn dish which looked and tasted amazing. The two sisters that run this will make you feel most welcome as will the rest of the delightful members of staff. Very good value. This is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in.We were 2 adults and a child and were given a great table near the bar. While everything we ate was superb, the seafood platter was just so gorgeous we tried to book again the following night but, unsurprisingly, they were fully booked for through the next week.The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere lovely.If you only go to one restaurant in Falmouth, it has to be this one.

Went to Amanzi for lunch yesterday and was amazed by the quality of the food. The seafood platter was out of his world as was the king prawns and spare ribs. Was slightly disappointed that the restaurant wasn’t participating in the eat out to help out as prices were quite high, however the quality of the food reflected the prices well. Would definitely recommend Amanzi to anyone looking for a delicious meal out in Falmouth.

We had lunch here and were delighted. All our food was fantastic and tbe service too. Deep fried Brie, Samosas and Peri peri prawns were all brilliant!!! Highly recommended!

We were in Falmouth for 3 days and we ate here twice- the whole place was just so welcoming and the food was fantastic. The staff went the extra mile to squeeze us in on a fully booked night but we didn't feel rushed at all. I was particularly impressed with the list of mocktails. We had ribs and enpanade (?) day 1- cooked to perfection and a meat lovers dream. The menu was so good that the next meal I had was 2 starters- I didn't want to miss anything- bunny chow and Malaysian samosa- The only regret I have is that there isn't a sharing platter or try lots of things -but what we had was fresh, tasted authentic and very reasonable for what it was- a real gem but book- it's not huge.

Went around 3 pm - the staff are welcoming. There is an interesting choice of dishes and a range of cocktails. I would recommend if you feel like trying something new. The Red Latte was a highlight at the end of the meal.

The food was typically South African and did not disappoint, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal ! Ian even made Sadza especially for my husband . Delicious Biltong and Droewors was available for purchase which made our day ! The owners Ian and Carolyn were extremely hospitable and made us feel right at home.

Every time we come to Cornwall we eat here and after 10 years we have not been disappointed. Last night people were being turned away as the restaurant was so busy. Great to see! The food was excellent, great service and very cold wine. What more could you want?

Saw this restaurant on Trip Advisor, excellent reviews so when we passed it mid afternoon we decided to try it. All I can say is wow, what a fabulous meal. I cannot remember the name of the starter but it was prawns and avocado, thoroughly enjoyed this, didn’t think it was possible to beat it with the main but, again I don’t recall the name of the meal, it was steak and peppers on a skewer dripping garlic butter onto chips beneath it, absolutely mouth watering. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Where to start, service is welcoming and warm and the food is amazing. My girlfriend is South African and was delighted with the chance to eat some foods from home. Every dish was beautiful and tasty

This restaurant was recommended & did not disappoint. Very good food & very friendly service. The ostrich & rump on a skewer were excellent as were the starters samosas & sausage.The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 stars was that the staff don’t wear masks to protect themselves & others.They did have plenty of sanitisers around & sanitised the tables thoroughly after they were vacated which was good to see.

Wonderful to have something a little bit different on the high street. Prices a bit too high in my opinion for what you get. Reasonable service yet a bit slow. Would return but it was not amazing.

I don't normally write repeat reviews especially when the first visit was a great experience however today was one of my favourite and most memorable lunches in a while. Whether it's partly missing dining out during lockdown or the fact I've been a bit under the weather and finally got my appetite back today's food was superb.We came for late lunch about 2:30pm to find an empty restaraunt, and we got placed at a lovely window seat with the sun shining on us which immediately created a relaxed ambiance. Our waitress took our drinks order along with an order for some olives (which were really nice) and we chose our mains from a great choice. I opted for the prawns, with rice and garlic sauce my fiancee the ostrich which I would recommend getting medium due it being a really lean meat.Our food arrived in good time and I have to say these may have been the best prawns I have had. They were cooked to perfection, and juicy, sweet and succulent. The rice and garlic sauce a great accompaniment. I'm getting hungry thinking about them again. The ostrich was also perfect, very tender and so tasty. I tried some as have not had it before and would consider next time I visit if in the area. The chips also looked fabulous and fresh. I must also mention our fabulous cocktails which were tasty, with good rum and had a proper kick of booze no watered down versions here.The prices here are not cheap but worth every penny. Top quality food and drink, excellent, knowledgeable and friendly staff and a lovely laid back atmosphere I cannot recommend this place enough.

For something a little bit different you can’t go wrong.... cocktails were good - starters interesting and mains albeit a little pricey were great. All SA favourites were on the menu - Bunnychow and peri peri prawns and Ostrich too - what’s not to like ... we would return... go Bokke !!!

We ate here on 28th July for my husbands birthday. We were staying in Falmouth for a few days and met up with our daughter and her friend who reside in Falmouth for university.My daughter had the seafood grill and the rest of us all had the Steak Espatada which was incredible. The dish is very simple, steak (which is marinated) on a skewer with peppers and onions, on top of the MOST amazing crispy, chunky chips and a garlic butter which melts over the top.Great service and gorgeous food.

Lovely authentic South African food and drink. I had the half rack of ribs, plenty of food I just wanted to finish my girlfriends seafood platter which was incredible, the size of those prawns! Try this restaurant, the staff and setting are both top class

We had a truly wonderful meal on Tuesday night. My husband had the ribs, my son had the kebab and myself and my mum had king prawns with garlic sauce. The staff were very friendly and attentive.

We’ve visited Amanzi several times whilst studying in Falmouth and every time it has been fantastic. Great food with a relaxed atmosphere and super friendly staff. Ordered a cocktail that I wasn’t too fond of and they noticed and decided not to charge me for it which was lovely. Before moving away from the area we made a point of visiting one last time; provisions had been made for covid and the hygiene standards were great. Despite being an African themed restaurant there are still plenty of dishes that I would consider “safe” options for nervous/picky eaters, such as the steak with the monkey gland sauce or the fried Brie starter. Really going to miss visiting.

We have eaten here many times and always had a fantastic evening. Tonight was the first time we visited after being told that I can no longer eat meat on medical grounds.The prawns were so delicious that I didn't feel I had missed out at all.Thank you for another super evening. Situated on the Main Street this South African inspired restaurant has a great menu with lots of unusual dishes, again a very friendly welcome and explanation of the Covid preparations the restaurant was undertaking - again the staff made you feel very welcome and all the food coming out of the kitchen (not sure how the chefs manage in such a small space) was very very good - well recommended for dishes you won't find elsewhere in Falmouth.

We had a great dinner here with our two dogs at the back of the restaurant overlooking the harbour. We loved the view and the food and service was great. If you are in the area, definitely come and try the food.

Great food and authentic vibe. Had the ostrich: smoked then grilled, was tender and flavoursome with superb chips. Massive portion, no room for dessert. Did take out some of the homemade biltong though . Nice South African wine list .

Iv visited amanzis so much now that there is not a lot I haven’t tried on their menu. Yet, there is not one bad thing to say about this place. Outstanding food every time. You can really taste every flavour and the meat is always perfectly cooked to your liking! The owners are such lovely people and amazing hosts. They certainly know what they are doing when it comes to cooking this amzaing South African food.

Once again we have had the pleasure of eating here with friends. I still always go for the fish of the day in a creamy garlic sauce - its just fabulous. And the chips are just the best too.

Three of us ate here on a wet Monday night in February. No booking was necessary. The welcome was good - and we were shown to our table by a friendly waitress. The decor has an African theme - Lots of wood and bright graphics - and decorated with African masks etc. The menu was decent with a good variety of dishes and decent choices for vegan and vegetarian customers. I chose Peanut soup to start with and a vegetarian curry for main. My wife chose the prawns and avocado to start and meat main course. My daughter chose mussels to start with the same veg curry as me. Other than finding the peanut soup super bland and not actually tasting of peanuts - the food was OK - quite tasty with generous portions - but nothing to rave about. (to be fair, my wife loved the prawn starter in particular - and my daughter and i took half of our curry dishes back home to have for breakfast the next day.)So, no complaints about that - but the reason I wont eat here again is that the price is completely out of proportion with the quality of the food. For example, a plate of mussels for a main course is the best part £18 - and lobster is £42. which is ridiculous for this style of restaurant.Service was about average - We were attracted to the restaurant from the street because of its bright decor and signage and rough and ready looking tables and interior - looking like a kind of South African burger type establishment.. However, at around £40 per head for a starter, main course and a beer, the prices are those of a more expensive kind of restaurant. For me, the prices are simply not justified - the food and service are just not that good.. The decor also either needs to be adjusted to something that reflects the food - or vice versa.. The bill for 3 of us was £118 excluding service which for the above - is just too much.

I've just come back from a solo dinner out at Amanzi and have been impressed once again. Having stumbled upon this place in 2013, I used to go pretty often until I moved further away.I was really looking forward to visiting on a rare weekend back to Falmouth.The owner was very good about fitting me in in between reservations and was friendly and welcoming. She even offered to make me a cocktail not on the usual menu after I asked her to identify what cocktail I'd had last time based on a picture!I had the Bunny Chow starter and the Espetada for main with the monkey gland sauce. Food arrived promptly, was freshly cooked and very very tasty. The portions were ample and I was a bit gutted not to be able to fit in dessert. The younger lad waiting on tables was also very polite and friendly. I'm pretty sure the owner says she was fully booked tomorrow night otherwise I'd be back for more!

We went to this restaurant without booking on a Thursday evening and they had multiple tables free. We arrived and were promptly seated in given menus- which are quite extensive! All of the menu is South African dishes, which we were intrigued about. They have an extensive array of cocktails here but I didn't fancy any as they were priced at £8.50 each! We ordered a bottle of wine (£21) and while we were looking at the food menu a separate waitress came over and asked about drinks we had already ordered. I liked the attentiveness of the waitresses here but throughout the evening we seemed to be served by two who were not communicating to each other, despite being the only two working. It was a little bit annoying after a while!Anyway, we ordered the biltong as a nibble which was really pleasant. I had the peri peri prawn and avocado starter, which was really delicious. Half a whole avocado was very generous but I only got four small prawns for the entire dish, which was a bit of a shame as they were really yummy and it cost £8. My boyfriend had the mussels and he said they were a little bit underwhelming, again a shame. For mains, I had the hake with chorizo, spinach, potatoes and tomatoes, which was really nice the fish was cooked really well. The only thing is I wasn't blown away by the rest of my dish. I didn't finish all of it. My boyfriend had the sea bass which was the catch of the day at the time, he said it was really nice but the fish sauce was a little bit too rich and overpowered the fish. He ordered chips to come with his and we were amazed by them. The chips here are so nice, I had to ask our (one of) waitress(es) how they cooked them and she said that they are triple fried and salted. Honestly, I'd go back just for the chips. As we started eating a bit later, we obviously finished a bit later. They are advertised to close at 10:30 and so around the end of our meal we were asked if we were still eating (which we clearly were) which is fine, but the waitress then proceeded to check another 2 times and it was very off putting! I understand that they have jobs to do etc but we felt a little rushed towards the end of our meal. Not only this, but while in conversation with my boyfriend the waitress proceeded to chat to us from a table over while doing her duties. Again, nothing wrong with this, I like chatty staff it makes the experience a lot better, however we were in the middle of a conversation and she proceeded to talk about how she doesn't enjoy the music in the restaurant. We were too full for dessert and we would have liked to stay for another drink, but after declining dessert the waitress got the bill for us and so we thought we would get a drink somewhere else. This restaurant has the potential to be really really nice, but it's clear that the staff do not communicate very well and surprising that they charge so much for food/drinks and yet almost rush you out of the restaurant. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, I'm not sure. I think I'd only go back for the chips and some nibbles.

Unusual theme for Cornwall but the food is superb. Went there a few years ago when visiting Falmouth and the welcome and the food was still excellent.

Amanzi never disappoints, food has always been really lovely & cooked well, you have a good choice with the menu, the staff are very attentive & the cocktails are something else.Cannot wait for my next visit 😊

Our first time at an African restaurant and it was the first of soon to be many. The food was amazing and your staff are superb shame we only had the one night to visit you but we will be back in a couple of weeks for more.

Ate here one night in December 2019. Food was excellent and will definitely return. We all had different meals and each one was excellent.

This is a lovely intimate restaurant that does South African food. So many things to try, definitely not your conventional menu. All the food is fresh and the staff are attentive. They have a fabulous selection of cocktails, along with interesting wines and beer.

I've just had an outstanding meal consisting of Boerewors to start followed by the Espetada. My significant other is a gluten free vegetarian who had no problem finding options, one of which was the delightful Cape Malay Curry. I am literally pleased as punch. This is the best food we've had this year at a restaurant. And the cocktails! Smashing . The staff were fabulous. You know when you go out for food and everything comes together for that perfect experience? This was it. I implore you to visit. If you're checking reviews to make up your mind where to go, you will not regret this place. Came away with a bag of biltong for the drive home. Thank you for a very emotional Espetada experience.

We would thoroughly recommend this South African restaurant as a refreshing alternative to restaurants serving conventional food. I had a generous portion of butternut squash, cashew nut and lentil curry, and my partner had the Bobotie, a spiced minced meat, baked with an egg-based topping. We loved the African decor and the attentive staff.

Cant believe its a week since that amazing seafood platter, down to visit Falmouth Uni with my nephew , had no time to book anything but we had both seen the reviews for this amazing restaurant and luckily got a table - everything was great from the atmosphere to the warm welcome - and the food was so delicious , huge portion too unfortunately no room for dessert maybe next time we will give the cocktails a go too

The owner of our Airbnb recommended this restaurant and we weren’t disappointed, the greeting from the staff and the feel of the restaurant instantly told us we had made a good choice, the food lived up to expectation with all 3 of us sampling different meals, the Steak was one of the best, good wine choice, will defiantly be going back

Myself and my partner visited the restaurant for lunch, and wow! What a lunch we had! I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough for something a little out of the ordinary!

Absolutely amazing food, perfectly seasoned and genuine South African food. All the staff were friendly and entirely accommodating to all of our (very large) party. Not only is the food fantastic, the cocktail menu is broad, different and delectable (I definitely had a sore head the next morning!) I can’t wait to come back and sample some more from their amazing menu.

Spent a lovely evening with friends recently at Amanzi. The ambience was excellent, staff very friendly and helpful. The 4 of us had different meals and each meal delicious. Would recommend a visit. We will certainly return next time in Falmouth

Not having ventured into South African cuisine before we didn’t know what to expect, The restaurant is themed with wooden hut tin roofs and African artefacts including a portrait of the great Nelson Mendala. Service is excellent, not rushed, a happy greeting on arrival which continue throughout the visit.

From the first contact service was above and beyond. I was booking for three of us on a Saturday and unbeknownst to me at the time it was the Falmouth Oyster Festival weekend (a great event in its own right) so upon calling, was initially told the venue was understandably fully booked. Although I understood I explained we were coming down for a birthday and the lady on the phone immediately starting looking to see what she could do and organised a time for us at a slightly later sitting due to previous guests coming unusually early for a dinner reservation. This already filled me with confidence, however I cannot express just how much any expectations would be exceeded by this wonderful restaurant.

We came last night to celebrate my birthday, and were delighted by our first visit. The owner and staff were very welcoming, the order was taken quickly but not rushed. Our meal was exceptional, and we were asked several times if we were happy with the food. The owner had to turn people away several times, as tables were booked. We appreciated the fact that more customers weren’t crammed in, and that the atmosphere remained calm and relaxed. In essence, the service was very good, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit on our special night. We will be returning soon...!

Absolutely delicious food and a lovely waitress thank you so much. The bobotie was amazing and the ribs were great too, fantastic, highly recommended.

This was a great place to eat. The atmosphere was really good when we arrived and the African theme well done. Our server, young guy, was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. When our food arrived it was first rate. Our starters were delicious and when the main course arrived we were not disappointed. Definitely go here again.

We were looking for somewhere for an evening meal having dropped off eldest to uni and found this gem on trip advisor. Menu was enough out of the ordinary to appeal to my husband while still offering lots of options for me! The staff were very friendly and we had an awesome meal.

We ate here for the third year running as some of our family love it.
