What a wonderful experience.. I found this little gem after reading a few reviews on placed in the area and I'm glad we picked it. From the minute we walked in we were welcomed with smiles and explained all the specials. We started with a cocktail which was very very good and followed by more. We decided on the chefs special which came with bread and olives to start and then what ever the chef was in the mood for after.. dish after dish we very much enjoyed every plate.. even much so that we ordered two more dishes after as we wanted them again!!. The service from Izzy in particular made our night even more enjoyable and you could tell from the packed restaurant we were not the only ones enjoying ourselves.. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Utterly atrocious service and food. Will not be going back! When we complained the owner was completely unapologetic and still charged us full price. Will not be visiting again and one to avoid!

Friendly staff, but food although tasty extremely expensive. Peppers from a jar, too many potatoes to bulk out the dish. Tapas OK but wouldn't return for a main dish as overpriced for quality and content.

A last minute booking, but got a table and had a fabulous meal with great wine. A small busy restaurant but super atmosphere. Great ribeye steak, croquettas, calamari & patatas bravas 😋

Visited as part of a large party ~20 people. Staff were very welcoming on arrival, plenty of staff working. Waitresses promptly took our drinks and then food. Drinks were slow to arrive, cocktails not shaken with ice so like warm. Some drinks were prompt and some took upwards of 45 mins. Perhaps due to 1 member of staff making them at a time. Food was quick and hot! Highlights being the bravas and the 1kg sharer steak, beautifully cooked and tasted fantastic. Unfortunately portion sizes varied, the sharer dishes were excellent value for money and stars of the show. Lamb ‘cutlets’ were in fact a singular cutlet. And the seasonal ‘vegetables’ was a singular piece of aubergine. Obviously being a large party food came consistently out, not having to wait too long to order. Only a few desserts (3) were ordered along with a few coffees (6) which took an AGE to come, as their machine capacity was limited. The last coffee was almost an hour after ordering. Staff were fantastic throughout and the food tasted perfectly. Just wish a few of the tapas dishes were slightly larger to reflect their prices. Would visit again and would recommend despite some shortcomings.

Fabulous authentic Spanish food with friendly and efficient service from enthusiastic staff. Reasonable prices and well worth a visit.

We stopped in here by chance last year and though we would try it again this year and we were not disappointed. The food here is absolutely superb. Probably the best Spanish food i have tasted outside spain. I had a beetroot and tomato gazpacho which was so fresh and spicy Followed by some chicken thighs in a rich tomato sauce. Its in a semi industrial area but dont be put off by that the authenticity and quality of the food is what counts. Its not just worth a visit its a must visit absolutely excellent.

Last minute decision and not disappointed, food was excellent, padron peppers and chorizo and Gambas followed by ribeye steaks cooked perfectly. Staff friendly and helpful, first visit back after a couple of covid years and we are super happy!

We were a group of 14 people. Children and adults . we got a nice table in the back yard. from taking our order to serving our food, it’s took them 90 minutes. Note , not busy , not many customers . Plenty of personal.None of the food came at the same time. We also had to keep on asking for more bread. The portions are very small sized and quite expensive. It was good tasting food however, all in all not a very good experience at all because of all the waiting , the price contra the sizes. They could not figure out to split the bill.

Had an absolutely fantastic night! It was a first time visit for me, my husband and my parents. We visited for a birthday meal. The service was very attentive and we didn’t feel rushed. We all enjoyed our food and they cater to gluten free and vegetarian diets so those with dietary requirements had plenty of options and didn’t feel short changed. The wine list was small but had some lovely wines on it. A perfect birthday night! Thank you!

This was our second visit to this restaurant and the quality of the food and friendliness of the staff was brilliant, the tapas is a treat and would recommend the barraquito coffee to finish.

The food we had was some good tapas. We had croquettes, soft and fluffy with a nice crispy outer, patatas bravas, boneless chicken wings, very good, chorizo, which was OK, prawns, very tasty. It was quite pricey for what it was but the service was very good.

Just adore this restaurant! Staff are welcoming and helpful and the food speaks for itself. The children steal all the calamari! Minus some over ordering on our part, we never leave anything it’s all so delicious and lovely atmosphere

Have visited a number of times now with family and friends. Excellent food again. We had a selection of tapas including calamari, croquettes, garlic prawns, pork belly and bacon and feta salad followed by lamp chops and fries. Some of the party has desserts including crème brûlée and deconstructed cheesecake. Everything was cooked beautifully and served in a timely manner. We sat outside at the back and although it was evening time, due to the shelter we were comfortable and warm enough. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Despite pre- booking an outside table, it was not ready. We ordered drinks inside and eventually we shown to our table. Wait or had to be chased to take our order. On the plus side the food was delicious and the cocktails were great too.

We waited over an hour (about 70 mins) for a portion of garlic bread to come out, followed by everything else. Clearly overworked staff were doing their best, but all the tables around us who arrived after us were served, and it was difficult to get any attention. They were friendly, but either they need more staff or a better system. Food was good but not exceptional. We left feeling it wasn’t really up to the hype.

Visited for dinner and chose the chefs special tapas selection. Was a good variety of dishes (~5 plus bread & olives). All the tapas were cooked really well and seasoned beautifully. Would visit again for lunch or dinner if on the Island.

We chose 9 different tapas ans each and every one of them was superb. The only fault at this restaurant was that the three service staff were stretched to the limit. Pretty much every seat was taken and with service required on the front terrace, in the restaurant and out the back, it was an uphill task. We still enjoyed our evening and staff were very friendly. The food was worth waiting for though and it was our best meal of the holiday. Would definitely visit again.

The food at our visit was delicious, no complaints. The service,however was very poor. The young members of staff on duty were rushing around but there just did not seem to be enough of them. We would have ordered desert, more drinks and coffee had the service been better.

A fabulous selection of tasty tapas, rounded off with a delicious Rioja. Great service too. Definitely worth a visit!

The best tasting tapas I have tasted outside of Spain. The food could not be faulted, the service was good despite the hassles of social distancing, the atmosphere again under Covid circumstances was nice. would definitely recommend (if you like sphanish food) would go again if/when back in the IOW.

Had lunch there end of August. Very good food. It was very quiet at lunchtime so cannot comment on ambience etc...but service was fast and helpful. Great food and good value for money.

Lovely food and well presented, but the chefs selection all came at once. So a bit of a challenge to get them on the table and also be easy to reach. A little time between pairs of dishes would be appropriate, and maybe some extra bread.

Incredible food quality, beautiful presentation and excellent service, we even repeated some tapas. The best Spanish we ever had in UK and we have already been living in London for 15 years. Mikel, thank you for having us, looking forward for the next visit.

This is a bit of a secret gem I think. Lovely food, family friendly and extremely helpful staff. Felt Covid safe! Didn’t give five stars as we were not told we would be sat outside and we were not really dressed for it but they did get us blankets! Would go back without a doubt.

Excellent tapas and service in Cowes at The Basque Kitchen, nothing was too much trouble and waiters and waitresses wore masks and made you feel very safe and were most welcoming. The food was superb and we would definitely recommend it for Spanish Tapas!

This is an absolute gem and a must visit if ever in Cowes.We decided that the adults would have the Chefs tapas menu and preselected dishes for the children, so that they weren’t disappointed. There is no children’s menu available, so be warned if your little ones aren’t that adventurous. Thankfully our’s do and they enjoyed the meal as much as the adults. There was a good choice of specials and the general menu was also very good. We received 2 lots of 7 dishes per pair of adults, which was all very fresh and very tasty.We all enjoyed the meal and the venue is typically decorated. The staff were all very knowledgeable and helped wherever they could. Just out of town, it’s worth a wander AND you must have the calamari.

A superb evening, had an outside table at the back adjacent to the marina, great ambiance and fantastic service. It feels very family run. We had the chef’s selection and superb value (thanks Rishi!) - all in all a great Cowes restaurant

Some of recent criticism in reviews are quite unwarranted if you read the ill-informed comments.Why complain about small portions when you orders tapas or moan when you try and book a table for 20 in a small restaurant during a pandemic and what that must mean for the restaurant.We had a meal on Friday lunch for two people. Service friendly and attentive without being fussy and tapas dishes all very tasty - salmon on specials board especially yummy. Not a flash or pretentious place and tapas never the cheapest meal anywhere if you’re feeling hungry but decent value for money and a very enjoyable lunch. Would recommend

Hearty food with the kids and parents. Had a great journey through the menu and ending up visiting twice.

We went in hungry for our dinner and came out still feeling hungry and robbed. Food potions are minuscule but the overwhelming theme of the evening was trying to get the attention of our waiter. Any waiter. We were in there for nearly 3 hours and the whole exercise of eating lasted 20 minutes. We even had to wait an awful long time to get the our Bill. The waiter then disappeared. We eventually threw cash at the bill to get away as they did not even come to take the card payment.I care about good food but service should be paramount. As a tourist with only 2 evenings in town, I felt this evening was ruined for us. I also wonder -as the only brown skinned people for the evening -if we were treated specially.Avoid this place!

After reading good reviews we booked a week ahead. Turned up this evening for a 630 table and despite there being very few other customers were told we couldn’t have a table outside. We were placed on a table (by the toilets) that was filthy. The waitress came over and said she would clean it explaining they had had a busy lunch service. She came back, gave it a cursory clean and handed us menus that were not single use. At that point we decided to leave! Seriously unimpressed with the hygiene. Just not acceptable at the current time.

Was very much looking forward to our meal at this restaurant as there were many great reviews and the food was simply amazing. However the service was some of the worst that we have ever received. Ordered the bread with oil to start, bread eventually came but no oil asked for that when the mains turned up but it never appeared. Then the mains was missing the pork belly so had to ask for that which turned up when we had finished most of the main course. After waiting for about 30 mins we eventually caught hold of a server to get the dessert menu but they never came back to ask if we wanted anything. After another 30 mins and as it was now closing we paid the bill and left.Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone if they wish to actually get their entire order delivered to them.

Having read the reviews on here, we had high hopes. Arrived for prebooked table and no track and trace details were taken at all. Every other bar or restaurant we’ve been to on the island took the details on arrival, but it was never mentioned here.We were shown to a table with no social distancing possibility at all. Opposite the kitchen hatch, next to the bar, and right where other customers needed to walk through to get to their table at the rear of the restaurant. All of the staff were within a couple of feet from us for considerable amounts of time, and several customers walked past us on the way to their tables. We ordered some drinks when we were seated and they arrived ok, but shortly after that we asked for some water but it didn’t arrive and we had to ask again after 10 minutes.Visited the toilets to wash my hands and there was no soap. When I went at the end of the meal nearly 2 hours later, there was still no soap. My wife also visited the ladies and there was no soap there either. Not good right now when hygiene is paramount.We asked if we could move to one of the free tables as we were uncomfortable being so close to the walkway and staff standing by the kitchen hatch. We were told “they’re all booked”, turns out it hadn’t been checked and that was just a lie. Eventually at the 2nd time of asking, we were allowed to move to one of the free tables that was more out of the way. We had to flag down a waitress for another drink, nobody ever asked us if we wanted another the whole time we were here. 15 minutes later, it hadn’t arrived so we had to ask again.We had the 1kg steak to share. It took more than an hour to arrive. We were asked if we wanted any sauces, asked for ketchup but that never arrived. By this time I was fed up of trying to flag staff to do their job so gave up and went without. In fairness the steak was good.We saw they had a dessert menu but by this time we’d been here 1:30 and couldn’t face a further wait/more errors. Overall, food good but service terrible and safety extremely questionable. Would advise to go somewhere else.

Let’s get this right. Food .. when it came was great. Unfortunately though service let them down massively..Arrived for a pre book seating to be told our table wasn’t ready. Asks to sit outside in the rain until someone left.. when eventually seated inside the food was fairly prompt, but had to remind the sever of the items that were missing.The staff just kept saying it was a mad night.. but to be honest they just appeared totally out of their depth.. It really needed someone front of house to get a grip and not just leave it to a load of young (inexperienced) staff trying to do their best. Again food great.. but really need to sort out front of house. Loads of potential and think we were unlucky!

Oh my. Such a bad restaurant. Going against the generic decent reviews of this place but my God what a terrible, terrible night we've had there on our last night of our staycation. Booked an outside garden table for 20.30 and got there bang on time to be seated inside next to the toilets. We told them we'd booked outside and were told there had "been a mixup" and could we have a drink inside whilst we waited for a table. We then tried to pre order the chicken and chorizo paella as it took 30-40 mins and the order was taken. Only for a waitress to then inform us there was no chorizo as "they can't get it to the island with what's going on with Covid". Would we be okay with a seafood one. No we wouldn't. So, we order different food when we eventually get sat outside. Table not made up and nobody dealing with us outside. Had to literally keep walking inside to get any waitress to do anything. On walking inside, see two of them stood doing nothing and the other had a order in her hands. Guess what it was? Chorizo, in a bowl. Nice! When questioned why this couldn't go in a paella was told that this was chorizo in cider and not the chorizo that could go on paella. I was told that they couldn't get it on the island with Covid. Lies. You have it, just put it in paella. Or couldn't you be bothered to make a paella? Looks like the latter which is weird for a Spanish restaurant. We bought the £50 steak for two which was all bone and fat so I would advise not to order that if you go. Good luck with the paella because it's not even on the menu in the restaurant, but is on the website menu. No Maitre D or obvious owner in sight to complain to. Whoever they are are playing a risky game employing what are clearly incredibly young (20 or under) girls that literally, don't have a clue how to run a restaurant. When challenged they just blame, blame, blame. Its the government's fault apparently for creating the 'eat out to help out' scheme, that keeps these morons in jobs. They were busier than normal on a Tuesday night which is why they couldn't cope. Ridiculous. You pay peanuts and, well, you know the rest. They all need sacking and the owner needs to get a grip on the business and be visible. Their invisibility shows how much they care about the place and the patrons. I will NEVER return and I'd be very, very careful if you read this and think about going. There are many better restaurants in the area with very good staff that deserve your custom more. Restaurants like this need to die out. You can't say you haven't been warned.

This is the first time we have visited this restaurant and the food was excellent. We selected 5 dishes off the tapas menu which was enough for two. The calamari was lovely and light and the crab filled peppers excellent.The staff were very friendly and helpful and full Covid measures were in place to make you feel safe.

Stumbled across this restaurant - but will definitely go back. Superb tapas - fresh tasting and full of flavor. Staff friendly and atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed. Lovely seating area outside too.

We were staying in the Marina and walked past this restaurant. Don’t be fooled by the ramshackle exterior. The atmosphere was great, the staff personable and attentive and the food delicious! Made for a great evening with friends.

Went there last night with my wife for pretty relaxed meal. We sat down at 630 and the restaurant was too busy . Sadly in these COVID time the later dinners had to wait for their food. Not the largest menu choices in the world but all dishes really tasty and great staff. I would def go back again

The staff were super friendly and amazing with my allergy (which is very rare and hard to cater for). The food was made to perfection and I loved it, would definitely recommend, service was a little slow but it allowed food to settle. Atmosphere great as well just amazing day! Also great covid-19 sanitation and masks

What an excellent meal we had in July during the pandemic. Safe, clean, and wonderful food. The staff were excellent, food superb and overall felt safe and comfortable. Recommend their Nordes gin! Go and support local businesses and you will get some great food.

We stayed in Shanklin, but crossed the island specifically to visit this place, after checking them out online. We didn't regret it. We tried a collection of (hot and cold) tapas plates, and loved all of them. Proper Mediterranean food, as it should be. Wine menu is small, but does the job. Apart from the regular menu, they also have some interesting rotating specials.It's already on the to-do list for our next visit to the Isle of Wight.

We sailed in to harbour, tied up at Shepherd's wharf and went for lunch at The Basque Kitchen. I had not tried them before but had heard good things. The menu looked very varied and full of good foord, but we went for the chef's selection of tapas for our group of 4. Lovely food including some lovely calamari, peppers stuffed with crab meat and some exceptionally tasty olives. Service with a smile and reasonable prices - recommended.

We had a group meal at the Basque Kitchen yesterday. Food was really nice and the chef/manager very nice. Not sure if he made a mistake but was charged £4.60 for a small beer. Shame as these sort of prices make me reluctant to go back.

Used to go a lot years back and was great - had been getting worse and stopped going over a year ago - thought I would give them another chance, but alas, it isn't any better, inattentive staff and poor food - go any where else if you can.

We popped in here after seeing the bone-in steak, cooked Basque style, on offer. The steak was delicious, as were the accompaniments, and the other dishes on the menu looked intriguing and well-priced. The wine on offer was good and we were tempted into desserts, both of which were equally as delicious as the main course.Friendly staff and a nice vibe contributed to make this a great meal.

It is not Spain, but it is authentic Spanish Basque food. A bit limiting in small measure but really comes into its own when there are lots of people and more dishes in greater quantity are serves. Absolutely deliscious!

A tucked away little treasure, we had a brilliant meal here. Very authentic and almost entirely gluten free menu including gluten free bread. Definitely worth a visit when in Cowes.

We have dined here before and whilst the food was nice the selection offered was not that great this time. Three tapas dishes, one of pre-cooked potatoes with a dressing, a plate of medium sized pawns and a tasty cheese dish for 2 people at £12 per head. Wow what a place! We eat a lot in Spain and this is as authentic as it gets! Could not fault a thing and the wine was superb. The padron peppers, Iberica ham and octopus was delicious, Sandy was our waitress and was brilliant, Michael the chef also came out to speak with us. We started off on the Rose, and finished with a lovely Red Rioja, we will be back and would recommend

Spanish meatballs very bland, pulled pork sent back to be reheated, in fact all dishes on the cool side. Rioja very drinkable and a nice cup of coffee to end but expensive for what you get.

Being great lovers of Tapas we were delighted to stumble upon this little gem for lunch and it did not disappoint in any way. It was a beautiful day and we sat in the rear garden which was delightful and quirky. The menu was amazing with a great specials board. We chose this restaurant for evening meal after browsing the internet for something different. We had a selections of Tapas and main course with beer and wine. Everything we had was well cooked and delicious. Excellent value as well. We will be coming back on our next trip across the Solent. Defiantly worth a visit if you like Spanish food and haven't tried it before.

Went to the basque kitchen last night, rapidly be coming our favourite Island restaurant. Excellent tapas calamari was gorgeous and the cod was silky and flavoursome, service frienday and relaxed.very reasonable prices.Try it you won't regret it

We met for a small family gathering in this Tapas restaurant that is in the marina. The food was good and well cooked. Good wine list and friendly staff. Ideal place to meet when arriving as we did by boat. Not particularly expensive and good range of food. Will certainly come again.

The Basque Kitchen is a real treat for a meal out. I had the Jildas as a starter which is olives, anchovies & green peppers. I wouldn't normally go for anchovies but this was a great bite. For main I had the Fillet 8oz fillet steak with chips and peppers.

Lovely tapas lunch. Best calamari and prawns I've had in the UK. Great service, attentive but not over bearing. Looking forward to a return visit.

We are local and stopped going when Amabi went downhill. Just been for my birthday meal and the same underwhelming food and ignored so much by waitress we had to go up to bar to pay dispite being only 1 of 3 tables Not a great birthday meal

The first eating place we found walking off the chain ferry from East Cowes so a little out of the town centre. Happy hour drew us in for some great choices of gin but the star of the show was the food. Freshly cooked, plenty of it and very tasty. A good choice of Tapas or main courses. Very friendly helpful staff. We will return.
