Am Fuaran Bar in Highland

At first sight, a lovely Scottish pub with a good decor. We were shown to our table, told there was no seafood today and given the basic menu which consists of 2 steaks, 2 pies and 2 vegetarian options. We were disappointed but ordered 2 pies. But then the blackboard menu came out and was passed around the other 3 tables of diners. On it, langoustines, scampi and haddock!!! We were absolutely baffled. The pies were decent (not worth £21 each though) but they left a bitter taste as we watched those plates of langoustines going to other tables. All we could think was that the other customers were staying on the campsite and were getting special treatment. We had driven 45 minutes to get to that seafood place. If you phone to book, make sure you say you’re on the campsite when they ask, you might be allowed seafood…

We visited for dinner as a family of 4 (two adults and two children) between Christmas & New Year while touring the NC500 and staying at the Port A Baigh Campsite which is directly opposite. When we arrived at Port A Baigh it was recommended that we ought to book in advance if we wanted dinner at the restaurant and I’m glad I did as although it was only mid-afternoon they were almost fully booked and only had two times available for us. Only a small pub, the atmosphere was warm and inviting with a roaring fire and plenty of Christmas decorations and lights. Service was amazing and nothing was too much trouble. Although the menu is brief the quality of the food more than makes up for it. My husband had steak & chips while I had haddock & chips and the children had chicken goujons & chips and cheeseburger & chips. Puddings were ice-cream for the children, Baileys Cheescake for me and Banoffee Cheesecake for hubby.

Located in a beautiful spot, and directly opposite Port A Bhaigh campsite, which was convenient for us :-) . The staff were lovely, the food was delicious, the venue is cosy and reasonably priced, can't ask for more really

This is not the easiest place to find, but if you do you will not be disappointed. Excellent food and good service. I had the steak burger, my wife the fish & chip, and both were the best we have ever had.

Popped up from Inverness for the day to sample lunch in beautiful weather. We had heard lots of great reviews from local friends and we weren't dissapointed. Both my wife and I had the langoustine scampi in a light batter with chips and a very fresh and delicious salad. This was possibly the best we have ever tasted. Staff (possibly the owners) were very friendly and helpful.

We walked a 6-mile round route to dine at this restaurant, having seen the amazing website and heard great reviews. What happened? There were no apologies, just a sad blackboard on the floor which was easily missable. The staff said nothing. No explanations given. We were served up awful junk food. It tasted as bad i it looked. Presumably straight out the freezer? None of the home grown salad or herb leaves mentioned on the business website. Instead, beige, dry and tasteless “chicken” burger and a glue-like stodgy bean burger. Both served with what tasted like oven chips? We also stupidly assumed, as it was a bar next to a campsite, dogs would be welcome. But instead we had to eat outside, where the local collie dog was roaming and kicking off dog fights. The outside eating areas had no cover, not even a tarp, so no protection from the drizzle. Hugely disappointing all round - but the staff didn’t seem to care about customer care or satisfaction. Save yourselves the bother, eat elsewhere.

Went for a birthday meal. Great food as always, Langoustines and scallops, and the best scampi in the world!

This is a hidden gem. I cannot say enough about the food and the service. Absolutely outstanding. They all work so hard but always smile and make you feel welcome. The food is out of this world. I can’t wait to go back next year. Thanks

Was on holiday in Reiff, seen a sign for the pub as it was such a beautiful afternoon we drove along the long, plenty of parking and plenty of seats outside with amazing views, you walk inside the pub and it’s amazing. We decided to book for the following day for evening meal, luckily we were able to get a table as it is so busy. We arrived for our meal and we were met by very friendly staff who showed us to our table. We were given a menu and seafood menu was on a board which was brought to the table. We weren’t rushed while we looked over the menu. The food well all I can say was AMAZING. We have ate in a lot of places and this was one of the best that we have ever been to. Ended up going back for food 3 times in a week and also for drinks in the beer garden with some of the most beautiful views of the summer isles. Highly recommended. Will certainly be returning next time we are near there.

Am Fuaran is a very cosy little pub/restaurant. We stopped by for some lunch, and there were quite a few other people also eating. Service was great, thank you to the lovely lady who served us. The dinner and lunch menus are the same - it's a small menu and a couple of items weren't available (though there were also a couple of seafood specials). That's the one suggestion we have, it would be nice to have a separate lunch menu as the dinner menu items were quite 'heavy', large and a bit expensive for lunchtime. However, there was also a children's menu and a couple of adults in our party ordered from this and we heard other people doing the same - the items on it were perfect for lunch! All of the food was delicious, with a particular mention for the chicken and mushroom pie which was exceptional! I would really recommend the Am Fuaran, particularly for an evening meal. We would definitely return.

this was an INCREDIBLY expensive meal for food that was mediocre at best... the chips were soggy, salad tastes like it was from tesco, and the carrots were like shop carrots heated up. i ordered scampi and the prawn was flavourless and the batter thin and chewy. i feel myself and the people i went with were entirely ripped off and now thats a huge sum of money i could of saved. really regretting my purchase and will NOT be going back nor recommending to anyone. the only good thing is that the staff were pleasant.

We had been here several times in the past and has invited friends to join us. Not sure what’s happened but the prices have almost doubled from what’s being advertised on the website. So that was a shocker for starters. Also the food was really poor. I had the scampi which came with frozen crinkle cut chips, packet salad and carrot batons warmed up so they were bland and limp. Dreadful! I didn’t even eat that it was so bad. All for £24 compared to the £14 shown on the website. It used to be very good food but £14 would have been expensive for the poor quality. We had planned to eat at the pub for two nights but not at that price! I’m so angry about this that I will not return. We’d planned a big group trip later in the year but I think we’ll find somewhere else now. Just blatant profiteering as it’s the only game in town. Shame. It used to be really excellent. :(

Looking for food near Ullapool and came across Am Fuaran and weren’t we lucky - beautiful evening drive to a real jewel of a place - great menu - surprising variety and quality and excellent meals - staff were fun and the whole evening was 5 stars - loved it - don’t usually write reviews but couldn’t not give this 👍👍👍

Best restaurant experience we have had in a long while. Cosy, comfy and characterful setting. Friendly and efficient staff. Excellent food and reasonably priced.

Nicole and Emily are both very welcoming, friendly and gave us on our 4 visits here excellent service. Andrew and Catrina are still here and the overall hospitality is great. The choice of fresh sea food is superb, and compliments to the chef !

We visited because of excellent reviews. We found staff were unreasonable and unfriendly. Smoked Salmon starter (12.95) was not whiskey cured and not fresh. Small portion. Vegetable Wellington was Luke warm, uncooked vegetables and highly acidic. We both had very bad stomachs one hour after eating even though we left half of it. Would not recommend, extortionate prices (most dishes at least £10 more than on website) Will not return for food despite idyllic location and has put us off booking to stay at the campsite

Food was good although a few things were off the menu. We had hoped for smoked salmon and langoustines - both unavailable ☹️. Be aware that prices are NOT as advertised on their website - be prepared to pay a good £10 more per dish!!!

As social-distancing reduces capacity booking was essential at this cosy bar to which we had been recommended. What was demonstrated was how to use good local ingredients to their best advantage. Crab, lobster, steak, fresh scampi all presented with smiling good-humour in these difficult times....

Great food as always. I would not visit if you have any concerns about COVID precautions. There are none. The bar was full of people watching sport and drinking. No staff at all wearing face coverings. No table service for drinks.

Well fantastic Wee Bar just opposite the Port A Bhaigh Campsite a few miles north of Achiltibuie.The food was fantastic and the scallops were biggest I have ever eaten.The rump steak with surf and turf was just what needed after a hard days walking.Had a few pints after and good craic in the pub even though we were all social distancing.Top food , great staff keep it up team Remember to book ahead as very busy

I truly believe the best scallops in the world are served here - and there's not much wrong with the lobster either. The situation is wonderful, the atmosphere convivial and the service efficient and friendly. It's a disappointment that the choice of beer isn't more interesting, but the remoteness may limit what's available. I would like to award a whole constellation of stars BUT there was a disconcerting lack of Covid precautions - a very crowded bar, unmasked staff and a bit more handling of glasses and cutlery than we'd have liked. But we'll still dream of returning.

Went up there for a family evening meal while visiting Coigach area. Due to Covid-19 pandemic related restrictions it required to book table at least two days in advance, which was not a big deal for us. During our visit food was okay but nothing extraordinary considering prices on the menu. Prawns and scallops were really nice but fish was very average and for some reason batter seemed to contain a lot of oil. Tables were quite far away from one another, while service appeared to be very nice and pleasant. Would probably come back for scallops and pint of beer again but nothing else than that.

Lovely wee place with great food and a welcoming atmosphere. Everything was delicious, including the vegetable wellington and I have a very fussy partner when it comes to vegetarian food. I had the hand-dived scallops, which were fantastic. Kids' menu was excellent and the staff were all very nice.

Simplement le meilleur Fish and Chips que j'ai mangé, pourtant je suis allé de nombreuses fois en Ecosse ! Très copieux et servi avec des "vegetables". Le poisson ultra-frais y est pour beaucoup. Our 2nd visit to the campsite at Altandhu, the pub at the top of the hill is very cosy and the food is fantastic, lots of local seafood available including Langoustine and Lobster. The staff are ver friendly and welcoming. My wife went for the chicken and mushroom pie that was cooked fresh, this was explained at the time of order but seeing as we’re in the far north we weren’t in any rush. Both mains were thoroughly enjoyed.

Visited in October for a meal and drinks when staying in the opposite campsite. The food was AMAZING. We had the scampi which in actual fact was langoustines in batter......these and the chips were amazing but ditch the carrots, they don’t go....a small side salad would be better. The only thing that could have made our visit better and merited a fifth star would have been for the drunk local to have been made to go.

This is our second visit to this pub/restaurant and both times the food has been excellent. Friendly waitresses and locals. Worth a visit when in the area.

Had a meal here last week and can't recommend it enough we both had the chicken and mushroom pie and it was exceptionally good, large portions with lovely chips and fresh vegetables. The pub is very deceptive looks like a small bungalow but is cosy and kind of rustic inside with candle lit tables, very well kept and just lovely. Our waitress was a lovely girl , so friendly. We stayed on the amazingly located campsite opposite and lived that also. Will definitely return.

Stayed in a cottage in Achiltibuie for a week and came here for dinner on the last night of our stay. A perfect evening with good food and very pleasant staff. Just disappointed we hadn’t visited earlier.

We booked to go for Sunday lunch yesterday and what a disaster. We arrived just before 2pm. The kitchen was dark the bar virtually empty and none of the restaurant table laid for meals. a man behind the bar fairly obviously wanted to ignore us. We stood around in the restaurant area for a few minutes and after the staff member ignored us left. They very obviously don't serve Sunday lunch - why the hell didn't they tell us when we phoned to book the table - we wasted many miles and much time yesterday.

We live in Achiltibuie, so we’ve eaten at the Fuaran lots of times (wonderful food!), but we’d never had the take-away fish supper until tonight when we had relatives staying.

This is truly a local pub, in a charming old building, with a great deck looking over the sea. Excellent food and service.

We were staying at loch Assynt for two nights, unfortunately the weather was terrible, but our host recommended we should rest here. The drive was long, but stunning, we saw at least 15 deers on our way. This pub has a really welcoming atmosphere and the food was perfect from stater to dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Our Italian friends were also really impressed with the location and the food.

Drove a long way down the single track for dinner. Well worth it. Small place with low ceilings and somewhat cramped tables. Lots of interesting stuff on the walls. Food is first-rate. My starter of creamed garlic mushrooms was terrific. The sauce was spiced just right. Watch out for the flower served on top of the mushrooms. Mine had two tiny live slugs crawling around it. The haddock mains was very fresh and came with chips and carrots. All portions are huge. Good wine list. Reasonable prices. A bit noisy inside but I enjoyed the very lively atmosphere.

We were staying in the campsite below the bar. We ate here twice. My wife had langoustines and scampi and loved them. I had two pies - a chicken and mushroom and a seafood special. Probably the best pies I've had, accompanied with good chips and lightly cooked vegetables. The room was lovely, quite dark and lit by candles. On another evening I watched the football and drank good beer. A great place.

What a delightful place. Well worth the effort of getting there. A limited menu but the freshest seafood you could ever find and beautifully presented. Not cheap but good value for money and a lovely cozy ambience overlooking the bay.

In the area we found very few places open on a Sunday but this one did and had decent reviews so we made it there in time for lunchtime opening.

We were staying in our caravan on the nearby campsite and other holidaymakers were keen to point out that we should try this restaurant. Absolutely outstanding food and service (two sisters who ran the service side like clockwork). Scallops and langoustine for starters, fillet steak and pie for mains. The food was the freshest we’d tasted for quite some time and cooked to perfection. The wine was good too. Worth a detour to this restaurant even if you’re 100 miles out of the way!

We recently visited this place while we were staying nearby. Whilst the decor was OK the food was terrible! We had the so-called garlic mushrooms as a starter and the slivers they served tasted as if they were out of a tin or frozen. They were floating around in a bowl of a dark oily substance which I guess was meant to be garlic butter! Main courses were no better! I had haddock, which was OK in itself, but ruined by the thick and partially uncooked batter it was cooked in. It was served with tasteless chips and unseasoned and bland carrots. My wife had fried scampi which were short in quantity and bland in flavour. She had the same veg selection. Based on our experience so far we decided to skip the desserts. Conclusion: way overpriced for what it promised.

Warm, friendly and attentive service from the Dingwall Academy girls. Food really quite excellent. Langoustine and Squatties really fresh and well seasoned. Perfectly cooked, succulent steak. Roasted vegetable Wellington really tasty. Plates dressed with lovely vegetables and garnishes. Cooked and presented by people who care. If you're any where near then be sure to drop by. If you're not anywhere near then change your plans. This peninsula is one of the finest in Scotland and luckily off the dreaded North Coast 500. Book in advance though or go for the take away menu.
