Am Birlinn in Argyll & Bute

Hooray open again! It is a complete treat to be able to eat out again and even more so at one of my favourite restaurants Am Birlinn. Simply the three courses were excellent , mussels , world class oysters, succulent slow roast pork shoulder and an espresso panacotta with roasted plums to finish. Yummm! Great chefs, friendly and professional front of house . They have not skipped a beat. Will be back next week.

Out of the way (from Tobermory) but a wonderful restaurant with fantastic food! We had Fish n Chips and Sauerbraten (which was very authentic). Staff excellent, friendly and efficient. Make sure you have a reservation as this place is very popular. Would most definitely eat here again if on the Isle.

After a couple of weeks cooking for ourselves in a camper van we decided to treat ourselves and come for a meal here and what a treat! I had the Mushroom Bruschetta to start which was to die for, and the boyfriend tried the Haggis which was surprisingly delicious! Duck for main was lovely and then cheesecake to finish off. We certainly spoiled ourselves!

Had meal there once, you need to pre-book as it is very popular. Staff were very friendly and service and food was great.

We booked a table for three last Friday evening and glad we had booked as the restaurant was full! We all had the mushroom starter which was lovely then one had pasta and two of us the fish and chips. Beautifully cooked and all very tasty. We managed to make room for dessert, chocolate pot with raspberries and pistachios and hubby had the apple strudel with ice cream, all delicious. The restaurant was busy but the staff very attentive and happy in their work. Another great experience and we will be back, thank you. For folk with children the childrens menu looks great. lovely place for lunch as well :)

Read all the reviews which spurred our visit. On Mull for a week and booked dinner for three nights. Not disappointed in any way. Great quality ingredients beautifully cooked and presented. Highly recommend this place. Booking essential which is a testament to its popularity.

This is away from main towns on a B Road but fully booked.We called on the off chance after a walk. and they managed to fit us in.The restaurant building is interesting, airy and light.The food was well prepared, delightfully presented and filling.The service first class.I would recommend booking.

It is always a pleasure to come back to Mull and that pleasure is heightened by eating at Am Birlinn. This visit we were with friends who agreed with our view that this restaurant serves some wonderful food.To me, food is much more than sustenance, it showcases culture, an awareness of provenance as well as a love of creating fantastic food that people will beat a path to your door for. Read the background to where the ingredients come from and the furthest is from Ulva Ferry down the road.We intend to make Mull a regular vacation location and, in doing so, will always look forward to the food that Am Birlinn serves.

Friendly staff. Superb food. The seafood stew is probably the best I have ever had, followed by excellent Hake. Smoked trout carpaccio was another highlight.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal in a lodge setting. The food was superb and the service was excellent.

Food is extremely tasty! I recommend the duck! It's not the cheapest of places but the food is worth it. There isn't much of you're wanting a lighter dish or a cheaper lunch except for a burger or fish and chips for around £12. Nothing to order for our 16 month old as children's menu is £6 per dish with large portions which is not worth it for the amount she eats and as said there aren't lighter dishes to order. This wasn't too problematic as the staff were happy for us to give our daughter a packed lunch that we had in the car. All in all, food was gorgeous and we would return again for a treat!

Excellent food and service (best service we experienced so far). Would love to come back for best haggis on the island and steak.

All the food here is locally sourced. The chef serves excellent tasting meals. Prawns, crab, belly pork, fresh bread. Veg was varied and fresh. All washed down with a great selection of wines. Lovely casual atmosphere. A great find.

My wife, a friend and I booked a table at this restaurant for lunch following reading numerous reviews on TA.

We dined here two nights this week, the menu was varied with plenty of choice and the food fantastic! Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely restaurant and great location, near to the beautiful Calgary Bay. Great Sticky toffee pudding!

We went in search of somewhere to eat that served chips (fussy child!) and happened across Am Birlinn. Hubby and I had handmade burger and chips and it was delicious. The menu also contained plenty of seafood options. The chips were hand-cut so my son wasn't too enthusiastic at first but he tried them and loved them. I can confirm that they were bloody good chips! The staff were friendly and polite. The restaurant itself is clean and modern and surrounded by lots of greenery. Would recommend :-)

Don’t know how, but this is the first time I’ve been to Am Birlinn but it certainly won’t be the last. This meal my wife and I had to celebrate our anniversary was simply delicious. Every morsel of every dish was brilliant.

Well cooked and presented food served in a large, airy and bright restaurant with friendly attentive service. There was a good range of choice on the menu for all courses. The wine list was interesting and (so rare in British restaurants) the mark ups were reasonable.

Three of us totally enjoyed our meal hete. The musjroom syarter is amazing. Lobdtet and prawn mains slso wete very good. Excellent service.

Das Lokal ist nicht einfach zu finden, es befindet sich ausserhalb des Ortes. Die Bedienung ist freundlich und das Essen sehr gut und abwechslungsreich.

We went with our children at the end of our week on Mull. The place is well presented, staff friendly and attentive and the food delicious. The children's menu was simple but exactly the kinds of things ours liked. We had mains of pork - absolutely beautiful and tender and seafood stew which was delicious. Puddings of chocolate pot and raspberry cheesecake also did not disappoint

I had haggis which were very tasteful and an amazing swordfish, very moist! The building is very modern, family friendly and a very nice service! A place to recommend!

We were returning from a day trip at Calgary beach and saw this restaurant and decided to chance our luck and see if they had a table for dinner. It was early evening on a Thursday around 6pm and we were in luck. The building looks great from the outside and it was comfortable and relaxing inside. I had the haggis spring rolls for a starter and seafood stew for the main. Both were fantastic. Our three year old son loved his dinner too. The staff were friendly and looked after us. We will definately be back for our next trip to Mull.

Had a spre hour inbetween work round 5 o'clock. So took my chance and went in. Fabulous as always! Fantastic welcome and dinner as always! Thanks guys x

First rate food, well cooked, locally sourced and well presented. Haggis spring rolls is a new one on me! The scallops were well cooked, the seafood and chorizo very good indeed. Cranachan cheesecake ok but the key lime posset was stunning!!!!! And plentiful! Very good and very reasonably priced for the island. It was £30 more expensive than the keel row and infinitely better. Keep up the standards and thank you.

We stopped here for a birthday lunch for our teenager. The building is beautiful. It was very quiet, and also peaceful. Staff polite. Limited choice for a fussy teenager, but the burger was delicious and prepared to her liking no relish. The duck itself in comparison looked like a small portion, it was delicious and prepared beautifully, just the right amount. The pork was so tender it too was delicious. Dogs only allowed by the outside seating area.

The food was beautiful and arrived quickly. The staff were very polite and professional and the atmosphere was great.

Very good service and reasonably priced compared to other restaurants on the island. Generous portions. We had fish and chips and the confit duck. Decent food. Would recommend.

I have to say the food was really, really good, spot on in fact. We enjoyed the restaurant and the service was fine, we found everything to be just right. All in all, highly recommended and we will be back next year, excellent.

My sister, brother-in-law and I had lunch at Am Birlinn on Wednesday 10th July. It's a beautiful building, which looks rather like a Swiss chalet. The young man who looked after us was very efficient and helpful, and the lunch was excellent.

Really bad service. Initially not welcoming, but towards the end of the meal they were just outright rude. We were informed 25 minutes before the next table was coming that we needed to hurry up. The owner mentioned this several times and indicated by tapping on her watch. We ordered ice cream for our children and she reminded us of the time, so we canceled the order and left. Really disappointing service, and they were clearly not pleased about having children in their restaurant. Despite the good food I would never eat at this place again

The food was very nice and they have a great menu, it was hard to pick what I wanted! The only downside was I wasn’t made to feel very welcome, which was disappointing. Would recommend for the food only.

Vous pouvez varier les menus , prendre 2 entrées .Langoustines, coquilles saint Jacques et mêmes des huîtres...sont au rendez vous .Prix raisonnables .

Fabulous location away from the stresses and strain of everyday life. Warmth, open and friendly well describes the atmosphere with attentive and relaxed staff. The salmon mousse starter was superb as indeed looked the rest of the starters. The main course of hake was nicely presented but to be honest the food was rather dry, and needed some jus to soak the fish with the bean and spinach base. A lovely venue perhaps slightly on the expensive side.

Can only agree with all the previous positive comments. Wonderful scallops, interesting and flavourful seafood stew. The latter such a large helping that we couldn’t finish it so got a doggy box & it made a good lunch the next day. Our vegetarian daughter, who is often disappointed with the token choices available at pubs & restaurants, was delighted with her fresh mushrooms & Parmesan on brioche to start, followed by spinach spätzle — German noodles — to follow. Spacious, airy room. Served by very pleasant, charming, helpful young people. Hope very much to come again.

We were on Mull for two weeks and booked Am Berlinn for our wedding anniversary meal to celebrate with my sister and brother in law. Absolutely fantastic meal. In fact, we all thought it was the best meal that any of us had eaten in a long time. So good we booked another night before we left which was equally as good. When we next find ourselves on Mull we will definitely be paying Am Berlinn another visit.

Staying on Mull for a week we booked in advance for a meal on our first evening as we had travelled from Penrith that day and including the ferry trip and reaching our accommodation on the island knew we wouldn't wish to cook.

Cadre sobre mais agréable, lumineux et spacieux . Excellent accueil, personnel aimable et efficace. Plats traditionnels écossais, cuisine soignée. Rien à reprocher.

We all had a fantastic meal and the quality of the cooking was stunning. This is a very out of the way location but I thoroughly recommend that you make the effort as they are delivering a really great product all round.

This chef has a great palette! Wonderful combination of ingredients. The slow cooked neck fillet was melt in the mouth and accompanied by a delicious reduction. My husband’s scallops with cauliflower purée, another unexpected but perfect combination. We had to go back for a second time. Would recommend this lovely place to everyone.

We ate here twice during our recent stay at Calgary, just ten minutes away. There has clearly been a big investment in this restaurant, and it didn’t disappoint in the food or service.

Went for my husbands birthday and it was a treat. Everyone enjoyed their starters, main, deserts . Love the emphasis on local produce & food miles. My lobster was heavenly !The two vegans were thoughtful catered for with oil and vinegar already on the table when we arrived. Staff were great only downside was they do close at 9 which seems a tad early for a 7.30 table we didn’t like to linger

Visited recently for dinner whilst on Mull and very impressed. Lovely setting, attention to detail, service and locally sourced food. We'd heard about Am Berlinn on a previous visit but didn't have the opportunity to visit. Really glad that we did on this occasion and would visit again. We also had the opportunity, by chance, to get a spot on their supper with puffins over the bank holiday weekend on Lunga. It was simply stunning.

I visited with my daughter and we were lucky to get a table as I hadn’t booked. The setting of the restaurant is lovely. My starter of scallops was incredible however I had pork for my main which was very average. Quite expensive but nice for a treat.

We had a fantastic meal here a few weeks ago. The service was excellent and the food was really good with generous portions. The restaurant was busy but everything was well managed. Great atmosphere and we really enjoyed our evening there. With out a doubt we will call back as soon as we get the chance!

We visited on a recent Sunday lunchtime, having booked well in advance (this is advised). The restaurant is nicely situated in pretty woodland, and was equally charming on the inside with its welcoming bar area opening out into a bright & open dining area.

We had a pretty good meal, with seafood stew and a great veggie option with spaetzle and asparagus. BUT I made the mistake of ordering the scallops, assuming that in a good seafood restaurant which paid attention to local sources they would be hand dived. Wrong, they were dredged, thus destroying the sea bottom for years to come. I'm devastated. I understand there is discussion in the management team about the ethics of selling these. I hope they'll see that a strong stand on this is vital for sustainability - and their reputation.

On the way to Calgary beach and stopped for lunch. Beautiful lobster and nice puddings. Very friendly staff and good service. Very light and spacious. You need to book at busy times. Very impressed they know where all the food comes from, very local using the best produce.

Great building, service efficient. We tried the bottled beer which was good.

As regular visitors to Mull we always visit this restaurant and, as ever, were not disappointed. Lovely food, friendly and warm atmosphere and staff. Highly recommended.

We had an excellent meal at this restaurant on the Isle of Mull. The building is fab, interior is spacious will lots of lovely local touches (art work). The service was friendly, attentive and the food seasonal & delicious.

We had read good reviews and were not disappointed. Especially liked the food miles information associated with the menu. Helpful and friendly and totally unpretentious.

We have eaten here three times during our stay on Mull, the food has been fantastic everytime. A continuous changing specials menu with delicious dishes on the a la carte too.

I'd fish & Seafood Stew starter which was wonderful, then sea bream which was average. The meal was expensive and the ambience not great - but it was mid-afternoon so maybe at busy times it would feel less like a gallery. It's in a delightful, forested location - we probably would return given the chance!

We ate here on our first night on the Isle of Mull and were delighted by the food, so immediately booked to come back the next night! In fact we ate here 4 times during our visit to the island so were gradually able to work our way through most of the menu! Excellent salmon mousse starter (10/10), absolutely fantastic venison stew with soft, light gnocchi and perfect veg, fish great especially fish and chips - light batter, excellent chips (always a good sign) and for a change superb, tasty vegetarian choices. I know they are closing down for the winter but I have no doubt that the food will be just as good when they open again next season - visit if you get the chance

Der Service war hervorragend und sehr freundlich Leider liegt das Am Birlinn etwas ab vom Schuss,was jedoch niemanden aufhalten sollte,die Fahrt lohnt sich. Immer wieder gerne,weiter so

Staying in Dervaig, this restaurant was recommended to us. The oysters were the freshest we had tasted and the scallops were beautifully cooked. Our mains of Mussels and the Seafood stew were also delicious. The locally sourced food is the main attraction of this restaurant. Service was good and the decor pleasant.

Lots of local produce and sea food served in a spacious new restaurant. Attentive service. Local art and hangings on the walls. Not dog friendly. Closes at 8pm. Tasty food.

Spectacular food and the service was impeccable. Off the beaten track but just down the road from Killoran House. You must eat here!

Had dinner here, and from start to finish the food and the experience was first rate. Excellent selection of specials including lamb which was amazing. Highly recommend to all.

Lobster was overpriced but delicious. Went back for lunch the next day and although it was 2:55 and the chef was due to go off it was no problem. Unusual in that area.

OK, I admit it. I am a food tourist. Visiting new places and museums and galleries do nothing for me. Show me a good place to eat and I am one happy individual.

Beautiful building in an equally nice location. The food was absolutely amazing, but the restaurant lacked atmosphere somehow. Just needed a bit of livening up. Other than that, a great place, we hope to revisit again.

An excellent operation located in a beautiful rural setting. Went twice on our short visit to Mull. Drinks and service were excellent, impressive wine list. Oysters were fresh and very tasty. Both langoustines and an order of cod were slightly over cooked but the lobster was done perfectly. Would certainly return if I get back to Mull. Imperative to book as the restaurant is reasonably small and fills up fast.

Wow! What a find, definitely worth the scenic trip out here, fantastic quality food,well presented , salad from the garden and large portions you won't be disappointed .

Visited with friends whilst staying on the island. Friendly staff and very nice food. had the haggis starter and fish and chips for main - both lovely. My wife raved about the mushroom starter - very garlicky, perfect for her. Didn't try the wine as I was driving :( but was assured it was fine

The langoustines were very fresh and tasted wonderful! Very enjoyable meal. Good selection of choices on the menu and a specials menu.

A modern 'boutique restaurant' environment specialising in seafood.

Having read other reviews, I made sure to book by email a couple of days ahead for lunch here. The response was positive and swift. I have to say that the food was good but slightly underwhelming. Much effort had gone into the cooking of the main component of the dishes but it needed more attention to the accompaniments. My venison casserole was delicious but the gnocchi were chewy and actually, all it needed was some good mash or new potatoes. It would also have benefited from the addition of some greens to cut through the richness of the meat & the sweetness of the braised cabbage. The Cranachan cheesecake was also disappointing. Thick and gluggy. The whisky was there but I couldn't taste any heather honey. Why not just serve Chranachan? All in all though it was a good meal, fairly priced and I would visit again.

Wow! Looked for somewhere special for the last night of a wonderful holiday in Calgary Bay. Followed Trip-advisor and selected here. We called in the previous day to make the reservation, they could only squeeze us in at 5:30 which suited us, but please book as the place fills up quickly.

We called in here at about 3pm to book a table for 5pm on the same day after walks in Calgary bay & Langamull beach so we had a healthy appetite. We reserved the table & were told we'd have to vacate it by 7pm which was no problem. It is a 10 minute drive from Dervaig. Lunch is served 12-2.30pm. Dinner is served between 5 & 9pm. For starters, my husband had the soup of the day which was minestrone (£4.20; very good). Bread was very good & came from Tobermory bakery. I had the haggis springroll (£6.95) which was a bit on the dry side for me but good. For mains, the other half had the cheese burger & chips (£11.50; in retrospect, it was missing the pickles & tomato relish) & I had the salmon with potatoes & asparagus (£16.95). I thoroughly enjoyed my main. My husband preferred the cheese burger he had in a nearby establishment the previous evening for the same price. We had water for the table & a large glass of Merlot (£6.50). Would recommend here if you are in the area but best to reserve a table to avoid disappointment!

Love the layout however the bathroom signs really annoyed me because they are gender specific and I think that the signs should be any colour and not gender stereotypical colours Kind regards ,Dominic and Family

A good menu full of excellent dishes. Good service. They ran out of the fish and chips on the night we went but plenty to choose from so not an issue. Not over priced so very happy.

I booked in advance based on previous reviews and we enjoyed a family meal here on the last day of our holiday. The food was delicious especially the seafood stew and mussels as well as the steak and Home made apple strudel. Service was good and the ambiance just right. Well worth a visit.

Lovely food, high quality, reasonably priced - and proper sized portions! A good children’s menu which also offers quality and good portions. The mushroom and truffle starter was amazing. You need to book in advance.

Fantastic resturant with friendly staff and excellent food at reasonable prices. The starters of Lougistine and Scollops were my favourites and the puddings - sticky toffee pudding and cheese cake. A jewel on a remote part of Mull.

The best cheesecake I have had in a long time. They make a Scottish cheesecake, Cranachan Cheesecake. One word, delicious.

We popped in for dinner without a reservation and they were initially were reluctant to seat us. However we we told if we wouldn’t mind waiting they could seat us! It was well worth the wait! The food was delicious! Service was friendly!

Visited on a Wednesday lunchtime not busy we had a table outside great service and choice

I went with 2 friends on 21st June & we all found our different choices to be superb. I chose mussels as starters, lamgoustines for main & sticky toffee pudding with ice cream as dessert. They were absolutely delicious.

The best langostines and the best sea bass we have ever had anywhere. That coupled with very friendly personal service from the owner and a great menu. We will return to Mull for the great food - this restaurant is a reason to visit

Wir (2 Pers.) haben Ende April im Am Birlinn gegessen und waren so begeistert von der innovativen Mixtur aus lokaler und internationaler Küche, dass wir gleich nach ein paar Tage das Restaurant an einem weiteren Abend besucht haben. Vom Slow Roasted Pork mit fränkischem Touch bis zum typisch schottischen Sticky Toffee Pudding waren alle Gänge sehr, sehr lecker. Die sehr freundliche Gestgeberin hat uns sowohl was die angebotenen Speisen angeht, als auch die Umgebung betreffend, hervorragend beraten. Wir konnten so zwei wundervolle Abende im Am Birlinn verbringen und können das Restaurant allen Mull-Besuchern wärmstens empfehlen. Herzlichen Dank!

We booked as advised, and visited early evening. Staff were very helpful, and we had 3 courses which were delicious. I'm vegetarian so had the mushroom starter (didn't ask whether the parmesan was veggie), and the Thai green curry. Husband had scallops and then sea bass. We each had cranachan cheesecake - should have shared - very large delicious portion. I finished off the meal with an Oban whisky - highly recommended. The restaurant itself is beautifully constructed and the artworks were gorgeous. Thoroughly recommended.

Very easy to find, given that its on the road between Calgary and Dervaig. Beautiful building, and comfortable restaurant. The food was really excellent, and the smoked salmon mousse was just superb. Service was excellent and friendly.

We went in june for having dinner. It closes at 21:00 as it appears in the website as in the restaurant schedule. We arrive 20:50 and they refuse to give us anything. We reply that dinners end at 21:00 . They did not care at...

Had dinner here tonight. Best meals in Mull. Service was amazing. Please ignore last review. Do go you won't be disappointed.
