This place is fantastic. Amazing roasts, great beers and the music was good too. Would very highly recommend.

First time here today. We had lunch and what a lunch. I had the lamb starter and my friend had the Kimchi starter both were sooo good. We both had steaks for our mains and they were cooked to perfection. Both driving so we didn't try any of the alcohol drinks and stuck to soft drinks. There wasn't a choice of Zero beer and they only had one 0.5% beer. I'd recommend a wee selection, some folk can't take even 0.5 % for various reasons. My only slight criticism is that the choice with the steak are mash chips or salad, e chose chips and I would have enjoyed some form of veg there too, even just a tiny side salad. Exceptional food in a beautiful restaurant with great service.

Service was painfully slow. Our food took one hour to arrive. The restaurant was half empty. We ordered the chateaubriand to share. It was good, but not excellent. The portion of chips was tiny. Onion rings and scallops were excellent. The peppercorn sauce was like gravy from cat food.

Easiest 5* review I've ever given. Hidden behind an unassuming doorway set in the entrance to Glasgow Central station is this delightful basement restaurant and bar. We had a delicious Sunday Roast today, beautifully cooked beef and associated vegetables. The staff were cheerful and attentive, and the ambience relaxed and friendly. A great place to visit at any time but particularly convenient if you've got a long wait for your train connection!

Great food and atmosphere highly recommended...a wee hidden gem

Outstanding Sunday Roast. Beef cooked perfectly for me (medium-medium rare) and great that they give you the option of that or well done. Kimchi Fritters to start were light, crispy and delicious. Great wine, tasty Negroni selection and the staff were very good and attentive. Highly recommend and will be back in future.

Excellent Sunday Lunch with great, friendly service. Would recommend it all but the stand out was the beef obviously and the Yorkshire pudding and gravy!! My partner really enjoyed the haggis starter and the sticky toffee pudding was yum. Different setting too, enjoyed being in the restaurant!

Great hidden gem located in Glasgow Central Rail Station offering fantastic steaks and a good range of drinks. The rum old fashions and the Corpse Revivers No2 are my go to choices here

I visited with friends and the atmosphere was really nice. The service was friendly and efficient and the roast beef and all the trimmings was absolutely superb. We moved into the bar after lunch for a drink and that was also good. Well worth a visit.

As per other reviews I never knew this place was here, I went in for a wine before the train to London and it is beautiful. I am a chef and as soon as you go down the stairs you see the kitchen and you know that these guys are at the top of their game! Should be better promoted.

Delicious Sunday roast! We had a very nice meal and enjoyed some drinks too. I loved the kimchi fritters for starters. I can’t believe I’ve lived in Glasgow all this time and had never even heard of this place until recently. The staff were friendly and attentive too, I would return. My only little thing was I felt my Yorkshire pudding was a little cold compared to the rest of the food but the meat and the veg were cooked perfectly. Only other thing to note is we didn’t get a phone signal at all which wouldn’t have bothered me (they do free wifi), but my boyfriend was oncall and he would have missed any phone calls that come through.

Walked past this restaurant for years without realising it was there. You can actually enter from Glasgow central station which makes it ideal if you're traveling by train. We had chateau briand which was cooked to perfection and the sides were delicious! The sticky caramel pudding was also amazing. The service was excellent too. We will definitely be back.

Had a lovely lunch here on a Thursday in December with my work friend. We both picked from the lunch menu and both had the roast chicken with mash and haggis bon bon. It takes about 20 mins as is cooked fresh but totally worth it - so tasty. Chicken breat comes on the bone. Serve is also great, attentive but not overbearing. It was quietish at lunch with a couple of larger Christmas party tables but atmosphere was still nice.

Great place for a last stop for beer and cocktails. Never tried the food but seen it and looked AMAZING so would definitely go back

Had the set menu, haggis croquettes lacking flavour. Ordered the d-rump medium rare, it was overcooked but the sauce and the chips are very good. Ganache as dessert is very good.

As always the good parts first , meal most enjoyable , cannot fault the quality of the food or service provided , the only thing that left a slightly sour taste was the service charge , no complaints on this being levied on the meal in the dining room but prior to meeting my friend I stood at the bar and purchased a glass of beer , it was only later when I checked my account I noticed that a 5% charged had been added , it seems to me that I had been charged a service charge for the bar person to pour a drink , what is next , I always thought that a service charge was for a higher than normal level of service , perhaps I an wrong , hope my local Bar does not start this practise ,

We had a great Sunday roast with friends and family. Lovely food and a relaxed atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Booked a table for my son's 21st. Staff were great. Gave us time & space to catch up, chat, take photos & open presents etc Didn't rush us at all. Everyone enjoyed their food too which was good. Thank you to the staff at the Alston!! :-)

Great food had a sirloin with salad and mushrooms in garlic and chili. Friendly and smiling service. My warmest recommendation.

I've been meaning to pop in here for some time but never got around to it. Managed to get there for a Saturday lunch of steak and fries and it was delightful. Lovely space below the Central Station. It's clean, tidy and well ordered. The staff are pleasant, smiley without any falseness and able to recommend food and drink properly. The food we had was lovely, very simple and cooked perfectly. I/we will definitely be back.

I often jump into Alston Bar & Grill for drinks when waiting for a train and have never been disappointed. Their speciality is gin and the selection is huge and changes on a regular basis. They offer a perfect serve for every gin on the menu and have four or five tonics to choose from. When I visited most recently, I was doing Dry January and opted for a mocktail. I was so impressed, they were affordable and so delicious!

Only had a few pre concert drinks, however service and ambiance was excellent.

Not exaggerating but this is the best steak I've had in Glasgow. I had a fillet and my boyfriend got a sirloin. They were cooked perfectly and had so much flavour. A side of mash and chips was included with the steak but we also added Mac and cheese which was delicious. For puddings we finished with a sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream - divine! Perfect spot for a special occasion. Great atmosphere and wonderful service!

This restaurant is quirkily located under Glasgow station so wasn't sure what to expect but what a gem it is.. We had booked a table and were greeted by the manger at the door. She provided a really warm, bubbly and professional welcome and it really set the tone for the rest of our evening. The menu had lots of things to offer and nothing disappointed. We were actually celebrating so we treated ourselves and went for the porterhouse steak with several sides and not only did it not disappoint, it was absolutely outstanding quality and cooked to perfection. For me personally, it was the nicest steak I have ever eaten. The service was nothing short of excellent and the staff were extremely attentive, friendly, helpful and kind. We would highly recommend this restaurant for both the food and the service. A huge thank you to the manager, Tiff, and her staff for such a wonderful evening. We will definitely be going back.

29th December 2023. The most disappointing steak I’ve ever had in a restaurant. I got the rib eye steak at £39 and it was very salty to the point where I couldn’t eat it. The server seemed to think that this might be because all the chefs had seasoned it not knowing the other chefs did however my husband’s main course was also salty (but not as bad as my steak). The server then said that she wouldn’t charge me for a dessert even though I had hardly ate the steak. I had the sticky toffee pudding which was very dry and the clotted cream was just a lump of butter - I couldn’t eat this either. Overall, very disappointing and we won’t be back.

What a gorgeous quirky restaurant... A little hard to find as its in the entrance of the train station but the food was amazing... Loved the menu and the staff were very friendly and helpful when I asked them about the unusual cheese with figs on the starter menu... The chef actually brought us a big chunk of it with crackers to take home... So lovely and we'll be back 😊

Never even knew this was under Central Station. A hidden gem

After ordering we waited a while before our meal arrived and when it did it was a total disappointment. Two of had turkey which was almost cold, dry and had a teaspoonful of sauce the so called brie mash also cold just tasted like supermarket ready made mash, the other member of our party had steak and totally burnt chips! that should never have left the kitchen. We should have sent it all back but we had waited so long we just made the best of it After paying the £150 bill we thought we would just go through to the bar to finish off our day yet another mistake. The barmen seemed to think it was beneath them to clear the tables and at £24 for three drinks that is the least you would expect them to do. No one waiting to be served, dirty tables everywhere, including ours and the two of them just stood looking at there phones shocking service again. We would not recommend this place and we will never be back.

Originally arrived here after we were gifted a voucher by our son, booked a hotel for the night but when we arrived we were told the voucher was not valid despite it clearly stating it was. We spoke to management a couple of weeks later and we were given an apology and told it was valid so when we book again they will look after us. We rebooked in November for four people. We were told we would be given the monetary value of the voucher which was £70, we were given £65. Anyway not a massive problem! The food!! Well it was awful! One of our table loves beef jerky and asked if the starter was just beef jerky, I said surely not in an expensive restaurant, but it was just jerky in a bowl. We ordered steaks cooked to different levels but both were the same. We ordered two sauces but couldn't tell them apart, and the chips were just awful, soggy and overcooked. The meal cost us £300! For four people, with drinks to be fair, but never again. So disappointed as I had heard good things about this place but overall two incredibly bad experiences!

Late afternoon visit. Fantastic value Christmas menu. Melt in mouth delicious steak. Staff friendly and attentive. Would recommend.

An absolutely gorgeous meal! We got the chateaubriand medium well which came with the chips and sauces - we ordered it with a peppercorn sauce and garlic and herb butter. It was utterly delicious, we couldn’t fault a single thing. If I could visit every day from Newcastle I would! The staff that helped us were so friendly and welcoming, and we had a bar suggestion or two from the one who took our order. An extensive drinks list and a unique restaurant interior. You’ve been the highlight of my weekend away here and I’d love to come back 🧡

Went here as a random choice for a friend catchup lunch today, and loved it - Sunday roast was delicious, and great service and tasty cocktails too :) Sadly didn't have room for dessert in the end, hopefully next time :)

Not been for a few years, so decided to visit to mark my cousin's birthday. The menu is pretty meat focused as it should be with the name of this restaurant, and the only discussion was about a starter, which steak, and what sides. We both had different steaks, and there were no complaints. Cooked and seasoned to perfection. The sides were maybe an indulgence, but it was a Saturday! We stuck to the IPAs, which kept coming. There was a healthy buzz in the place and the diners included, as far as I could see, couples, friends, families, and celebrations. With such a central location, helpful staff, and quality food, why wouldn’t you visit?

Alston Bar & Beef is the best steak restaurant I have ever been to. We had a group of 13- not only was the steak dinners exceptional, but server Tiffany took amazing good care of all 13 of us. Food was hot, orders exact, drinks generous and delicious, atmosphere incredible and was able to accommodate our large group. I cannot recommend this establishment enough! Thank you Tiffany for making our family cared for and comfortable!! We’ll be back next time in Glasgow!!

Unbelievable food and service. Stakes were 10/10.

Busy Friday but chose 2pm table so atmosphere just right. Steak sandwich and fries nicely presented though steak quickly cooled with cold dressing and pickle on top. Cranachan was excellent! Wine very nice. By time of leaving it had become very busy and staff had changed over. Calculating £74 for two 2 course lunches we thought £80 left a reasonable tip. Unfortunately the bill was £81.40. Small print informed us there was a service charge of 10%. I took out my purse, and the wait person said “We do take card”. I replied that we preferred to pay cash to which she replied “We take cash, but we don’t give cash back!” My friend and I looked at each other in astonishment, and she repeated her words. We took that to mean that had we only had a £10 note we would have been given no change! Needless to say we scrabbled around & managed the 1.40 in twenty and five pence coins. We shan’t be rushing back when Chilean Merlot at £30 per bottle becomes £33 at a stroke!

I popped in with a friend for cocktails en route home. Great atmosphere, staff lovely and attentive and cocktails superb. I’ll be back soon!

Absolutely stunning meal in the loveliest venue with some of the most friendly and professional staff I have come across in Glasgow- Lesley served us and couldn't have been a better host! I frequently dine out, it's my preferred way to spend my weekends and I have yet to find a steak tastier than the ones I've had at Alston. This time around my friend and I went on the Thursday evening for their Chateaubriand deal- You get a beautiful chateaubriand to share, you get 2 sides (we went for the greens and Herby potatoes- delicious), 2 sauces ( peppercorn and chimichurri- very tasty) and a bottle of wine!- All for £70!! We also got an additional side of Garlic Mushrooms which might be my new favourite side dish- meaty mushrooms in copious amounts of garlic butter. Excellent value for money and in my opinion one of the best steak deals I've had for the quantity, quality and the price! Cocktails were great also and explained to me from knowledgeable and friendly bar tenders- Thanks Jim and Michael :) Definitely recommend!

Dined in Alston with my family earlier today to celebrate my mums birthday. 3 of us went for the rump from the Sunday roast menu, 2 had the chicken breast from the roast menu & 1 went for the fillet steak. All of the above were outstanding 👌 from the meat to the veg & even the gravy nothing could be faulted. Compliments to the chef & we will most definitely be returning.

Staff were so welcoming, food absolutely outstanding! Very rustic vibes, all round great experience highly recommend and will definitely be back! Amazing

Stand-offish bar staff need some serious re-training in customer service. When challenged about their inability to mix a cocktail correctly, they were visibly put out and proceeded to give unfriendly stares towards our table. I then returned to the bar to ask them if there was an issue in being challenged, following which we were asked to leave the premises by the duty manager for being "aggressive", with no opportunity to give our side of the story. Won't be returning - will instead give my custom to bars offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

This was the second Sunday meal at Alston Bar and Beef. Both times the food was delicious, the steak and roast properly medium rare, and the seasoning exceptional. The manager, Tiffany, was friendly and attentive, the servers have us the appropriate level of attention, and our experience was as nearly perfect as could be expected. We would recommend Alston to everyone.

I tend to come here frequently as the location for Central station couldn't be better. A great vibe always bustling and good atmosphere. A great selection of gins and ale and there is a cocktail menu.. Had dinner for 4 all had steak and they were cooked to perfection our waiting staff were very good and my elderly mum was well looked after and needed to lift to get underground. I love the decor and the ceilings the TV showing train times is a nice touch. A wee bit on the pricey side but the quality made it worthwhile my 3 guests were first time visitors and all loved it.

Good food but service was absolutely appalling, the staff practically just ignored us, waited over an hour for food, was so hungry i needed some bread but could not even get attention to ask for this, I had to get up and go to the desk to ask, gave up on getting desert and had to put our coats on and walk to desk before someone gave us a bill. i wrote to the management the next day but did not even get a response, very poor show, i have since talked to several other people who had similar experiences. I would not go back.

First time in. Friendly staff who made us welcome from the start. GREAT gin and tonics and delicious coffee. Didn't order food but will be back soon. Will sample menu next time. 8 /10.

Well the roast beef Sunday lunch was fine. £25 for 2 courses I felt was a bit steep . The dessert was completely disappointing. Carnachan...tiny bit of oatmeal/ granola and swamped in cream. Not nice. We left them

What a great place in an unusual place in Central Station. Set in Old railway tunnel. The staff were fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed our food, which was a Chateaubriand, with sauces and two sides of your choice, was excellent we also had the pear crumble, mmm. Would definitely recommend this restaurant 👌

As with many places in Glasgow this is a painted underground cavern - it has its own charm. It was a great find - they made it very hard to find entrance. But it was totally worth it. Good steak made properly, good portion sizes and great combo deal for steak dinner with bottle of wine for two people.

We stopped here for dinner before heading to the Kevin Bridges show at the SEC and we're so glad we did. We were greeted and escorted to our table straight away. The man who escorted us, gave us menus and offered water for the table almost immediately. The menu was really varied and I was pleased to see that the price of steak included chips and a sauce of your choice. The food was amazing; the steak cooked to perfection, the chips were really nice (triple cooked style) and our sides and starters were also really tasty! The service remained pleasant and attentive throughout and we felt well looked after. We would definitely come back here for another meal and will also recommend to friends too. Good work Team Alston!

This was our first taste of Glasgow cuisine as a honeymoon couple from Pennsylvania. That being said, we were very impressed with the food, the staff, and the atmosphere. We would definitely recommend any travelers giving this place a try.

Superb food, however a ridiculous attitude from a member of staff when walking out of the premises with a recorked bottle of wine from which only one glass had been drank.

This place was delicious! Steak was cooked perfectly and the garlic butter WBA’s a perfect compliment to it. Definitely get the truffle fries, some of the best fries I have ever tasted.

What a great wee place. You'll find this restaurant tucked away under the Gordon St entrance to central station. For a Wednesday night it seemed fairly popular with plenty of people coming and going, eating and drinking. Service was attentive, food was amazing and was great value for money. Would defo recommend the Butchers cuts for 2 offer, though the other menu options looked equally great.

Well decorated underground restaurant. One of the best desserts I have ever had in Glasgow. It was made by real fruit drizzled with crunchy nuts cereal, strange mix but tasted amazing!

Went on Thursday as staying in the Grand Central Hotel. Excellent food and service, and on Thursdays you can get a nice selection of lower-end cuts and good sides + a bottle of wine for £50. Mac and Cheese is also excellent. Nice atmosphere, would definitely come back if in Glasgow.

Food and staff lovely but the noise from the other diners was horrendous, the noise was unbearable.

Myself & my partner went here on 17/12/21 for a meal. The food was good but the service was terrible! After waiting twenty minutes for the plates to be cleared from our table we tried to order some more drinks. Again after a significant wait, we just gave up. Complained but still got charged £81 for two steaks and two drinks! Terrible, terrible service. It is certainly not worth the money, you get better service in Weatherspoon! The place was empty with an abundance of staff as all of the Christmas bookings had been cancelled due to Covid. Avoid.

Great food, excellent service. We both had a turkey pie and it was immense! And so unexpected to get a surprise at the end as well (see photo). Definitely going back another time and location so handy for getting home on the train after! Thanks xxx

It's been a few years since we last visited Alston Bar & Beef, so we were worried that things may have changed. We shouldn't have worried! We ordered from the small menu, costing £50; which saw us sampling 3 generous cuts of beef, plus 2 sides and 2 sauces. There is as also a full bottle of wine to share included in this price. The beef was beautiful and cooked to perfection. The table service was prompt but not overbearing and the staff who served us were friendly and knowledgeable about the food and the drinks on offer. We both had a lovely time and would return to eat from this menu again! As ever, there was an amazing selection of gins, all perfect served, which really makes all the difference. My husband had draft beer which seemed to go down a treat. The restaurant was quiet and table are well spaced out which quelled our covid-related anxiety. Looking forward to returning on the future.

This was not the first time I have visited Alston. I always return to eateries where food is of decent quality. A table was booked in advance, Roast Sunday lunch 2 persons. Soup was excellent, however the 35 minute wait for the main course was not. I am at a loss as to why this was, as the menu is very limited. On complaining to the Server who may have been the Manager, she apologised stating is was because they had so many tables in at the one time. I tried to dispute this as there was empty tables and we did not all arrive at the one time. This was dismissed with no incentive to make amends. I find this to be unacceptable in these troubling times as the prices had been increased. Alston needs to do better in the Kitchen. The food is great but due to the long wait and not even the offer of a free coffee to make things right. We shall not return which is a great shame as I am keen to support hospitality whilst we can. It was also very cold, I understand heat is low due to virus spread protection, however a couple of degrees warmer would have been appreciated.

No es el mejor servicio de bebidas. Fuimos a tomar una copa antes del tren el domingo por la noche. Pedimos dos gin tonics, pero nos dijeron que solo podíamos tener un vaso de gin de globo si pedíamos dobles. Eran las 9 en punto y solo había otras dos parejas en el lugar, así que realmente no veía por qué era tan importante. Nuestro único día libre desde que se aliviaron las restricciones de COVID y en todos los demás lugares que visitamos recibimos un gran servicio. Bastante decepcionado y sin propina por desgracia.

The food was amazing, we enjoyed our visit and the meat was of good quality. The service was good and the staff checked that we were enjoying our meal and offered us more drinks during our meal. Would definetely recommend visiting here :)

First visit to this place and it certainly wont be the last, had a beautiful steak cooked to perfection, I mentioned to the waiter I'd probably be missing my Birthday meal due to the Corona virus and he came with a glass of prosecco for me, and lit a candle on my dessert! Visité un sábado por la noche con amigos visitantes y nuestra comida fue impecable.Dúo de salmón ahumado fue muy bueno, solomillo para seguir aún mejor.Una mención especial para la salsa de queso azul y las papas fritas con el bistec, ambos fueron lo mejor que he tenido.Alston es mi lugar predeterminado para llevar a cualquiera cuando visitan Glasgow y ha sido constante durante muchos años.

Gran lugar. Lo aprendí en una buena publicación de blog sobre qué hacer en Glasgow en 48 h de un fin de semana. No me arrepiento de nada. El personal es súper profesional y amable, la selección de ginebras es increíble, el whisky agrio también fue genial con una consulta si lo quieres con bourbon o whisky. El ambiente de una bodega subterránea debajo de la estación central es muy agradable. Como turista que no ha leído sobre él, probablemente lo omita, ya que su entrada se está perdiendo en la entrada de la estación central. La carne es deliciosa Los lados y las salsas también eran geniales. Si alguna vez volvemos a Glasgow, estoy seguro de que volveremos.

What a great place! I must have passed the door of Alston Bar and Beef a hundred times without knowing there was a restaurant there! Just been for Sunday Roast lunch and it was delicious, roast beef followed by chocolate brownie. We had a cocktail in the bar before eating and decided just to eat in the bar because there was such a great atmosphere there. All the staff were great, many thanks.

My friends and I have been here lots of times and I've previously left a 5 star review. Today we were disappointed. Portion sizes were really small. Had to send my food back as it was cold. We all had a 2 course meal but we left and were all still feeling hungry!

My friend and I stumbled upon this delightful cave of tranquility after eating in the city centre on a chilly afternoon.A few drinks and a well earned catch up later we sadly had to leave this delightful haven.Will definitely be back to sample the food next time.

My husband and I went for late lunch. We both had the feta&beetroot starter, which was incredible. As a main dish I had a steak which was prepared exactly how I like it, it doesnt happen often in restaurants. My husband had chicken pie, it was to die for. Friendly service on top everything, highly recommended restaurant.

Nice surroundings, Service was excellent, the Staff were friendly and the food was absolutely lovely.

Invited friends and they weren’t disappointed. Busy, but that’s a good thing! Steak and wine a perfect match. Recommend to all.

We have eaten here many times now and enjoyed a really lovely meal on a Monday evening to celebrate an anniversary. It was fairly quiet and service was good. I had the Alston burger (with flat iron steak included) and it was very tasty indeed - recommended! Chips were lovely and hot.

Stunning little find at central station.great cocktails great food and amazing chips :). Little slow on getting the bill but won’t stop me going back x
