Albany fish bar in Cardiff

I moved to Cardiff a few months ago and this is definitely my go-to anytime I crave fat chips! Service is always fast and they always adhere to my very specific cooking instructions 😂. Thanks AFB!! You’re brilliant!

Captain Birdseye is supposedly "old". The food that these guys serve possibly outdates him. Cod is not supposed to have the chew texture of Hubba Bubba nor is it supposed to smell like a barrel in a dungeon, especially at the prices that AFB charges. The only reason that food places continue doing this is because they think that they can get away with it. Not this time - time to boycott this place for good.

Whenever I crave for fish and chips this is my place. I've been buying from them for 3 years now and never had a problem. But I do recommend that you get your meal take away and not delivered.

V disappointed to visit this shop yesterday. Chips was not like it should be. Fish what he provide me was old. Customer service was rubbish. First he look at customers with weird way then he just wrap the chips in paper and put it on table. Put the coke can in table, put the bag on table and thats it. Customer has to put chips fish and can into bag himself. This is not respect of customers. Customer does not only want things but properly in bag with respect from till person. But that guy was only in hurry to take the payment. At the end i would say very poor and rubish service. Not recommended.

The food is always good, but if you want a delivery don't order through just eat, order direct. Ordered a cod box but ended up with just a bag of chips and as it was ordered through a third party they can't do anything. Bit of a dampner on a Friday night not going to lie. Won't be returning, by looking at the other reviews this place has gone downhill

Food was really good before when I got it while I was out but I was disappointed a few weeks ago I got a late delivery chips were not cooked properly and the pie it made my boyfriend ILL AND FISH WAS OVER COOKED NOT HAPPY AT ALL I did message shop no reply yet

Sorry to say the Fish Shop has deteriorated significantly since it changed ownership. Chips were stale & obvious not fresh, uneatable, straight in the bin. Place has deteriorated significantly in not serving good quality consistent food anymore.

Ordered from here today and it was horrible. Soggy cold chips and sausage and parts of our order were missing. The food that was there were mostly cold. My kids ended up throwing most of it in the bin. For £40 you would expect alot better. Definitely would not recommend this place.

The chips are always undercooked always... heaven forbid they have no chips stood by and you ask for chips and they make fresh ones, they won't cook them for long enough, and they will be pale...

Ordered takeaway from them tonight and they missed ideas of the order. I made them aware and they said they provided them and it was my mistake. I normally would bother challenging it but it was my 5 years olds items they missed! When I started to challenge the person to say they hadn’t provided the full order they said they didn’t understand me and it was my error. Terrible service and the way the individual spoke to me was disgusting.

This place used to be amazing but not sure what’s happened to it, portion sizes are absolutely tiny, chips undercooked and fish soggy.

Staff have an appaling attitude and 'surly' would be an understatement. More importanlty they are unhonest... I have been to this chip shop for three sundays on the trot, each time buying a small cod box with curry sauce... week 1: £7.35, week 2: £8.35, and finally today was week 3: £10.95 (it says a small cod box is £10.50 on their menu by the way.) I would advise anyone with any integrity at all to stay clear of this chip shop as they are fiddling the prices and conning their customers... basically... crooks.

Service is average, fish was ok but zero salt, zero sauces, zero lemon and for what i need 1kg chips, to forget the food was served very poorly?

What has happened to this place?! I remember the days when it actually served some of the best fish and chips in the city. I’ve been so disappointed the last 3-4 times I got food from this place (thinking it would be a one off). Food is extremely oily and mushy and the service abhorrent, they just don’t care. I called them a couple of months ago saying I’d be popping by the shop in 15min and offered to put the order in, very rudely they declined. Popped in and waited for 15min whilst they fried some cod. Today I saw how one of the “staff members” spoke to a lady… she was counting her money to pay and the guy preparing the food said in a loud voice “oi look at me, this is the one without salt and vinegar” disgusting way to address your customers. There is a much better alternative (freshers and nicer food with proper service) across the road ‘The Wellfield’ the only issue is that don’t take card. I for one will never step into the Albany Fish Bar again. The place is finished.

Food was ok but left a note in the app to change the gravy from a meal deal to curry sauce and also rang them to ask and still got sent gravy

I am a Muslim hijabi girl and I ordered fish and chips yesterday in the afternoon and it’s Ramadan(fasting period) and the guy who gave me my food after I payed made a very disrespectful comment asking me “Are you ordering for iftaar?” And i said yes and then he responded with “ aren’t you ordering a bit early? Iftaar is later in the evening it’s afternoon now.” He was implying that I am ordering to eat it now because he is assuming I am on my period, as girls don’t fast during the month if they are on their period! I could be sick or anything how dare he have audacity and disrespect to ask about why I am ordering my food early before breaking fast time? Why does he care about whether I am fasting or not? The sexual connotations behind this as he was trying to embarrass me in front of all his workers by implying I was on my period hence why I was eating early! Very inappropriate and disrespectful! I was the only girl ordering at the time as well no one was in the store. I was tired that day so I did not respond back and ignored the comment and walked out with the food however I am never going again! Very unprofessional, inappropriate and extremely disappointed! Worst Fish and Chips I have ever had! For a renowned high street chip shop it was very disappointing. One star for the piles of limp Chips. Poor quality small piece of cod in extremely crispy chewy batter. Come on guys, get the basic “ Fish &Chips” right for the average person trying to eat during present cost of living times.

I ordered food the other day worth £20 and it tasted awful. The fish was slimy and tasteless. Chips was soggy and with in tiny pieces. And the curry sauce was runny and had no flavour. Awful food and wouldn’t recommend.Not as good as it used to be

Ihave paid for large box of fish and chips when I have opened the box they wasn't much chips I have paid 9.95 for it is not worth it , and portion its too small for the large size

Absolutely horrific visit this evening, all the staff were just chatting and ignoring customers, ran out of essentials and when I eventually got served they messed my order up then told me I had to wait another 5 minutes for chips, I had already queued for 15 minutes, I was not prepared to wait so I said I was going to leave then I received abuse and humiliation as I walked out. I will not be back.

Great service here. Quality was good. One of our portions of fish had a soggy batter at bottom for some reason. We didn't have any vinegar either so not sure how that happened. Note: you'll probably need to park on side streets as that end gets busy with parked cars.

The guy on the till spoke with such aggression, Underneath my fish I found a lemon, I did not ask for this citrus fruit with my fish and chips It was quite a surprise for my stinging - sore salt drenched lips. I asked for only a little salt and vinegar I'm not a fan of the taste, apologies Gary Lineker For my dinner I did not expect the taste of walkers crisps I just fancied a normal large cod and chips. I asked for a tub of Irish curry They must have forgotten in their flailing disorganised hurry The guy started a conversation with me on my way out I just wanted to leave, never to return without a shadow of a doubt.

Chips were cold, curry was cold. The fish bites were soggy. It felt as if the chips were also refried. Only the chicken burger was nice. This used to be my favourite place to eat, but it has not been the same since the last year

I went to Albany Fish bar today with my daughter, the service was appalling! The one guy took my order and his colleague was having an argument/discussion with him about a transaction he had just done and how he didn't know how to use the contactless machine. I had said my order but my order was not getting any attention, I don't think he even acknowledged it! So another guy 5 minutes later rudely said "what's your order?" I said I've been served already, he again said yes what is it, I retold my order. The hold up in the shop was being taken out on me, it wasn't my faulr, but it gets worse! I asked for 2 large fish and chips in takeaway boxes originally, so the guy serving me began wrapping them up, I said I asked for them to be in boxes not wrapped. This is where the four of the workers all started to ganging up on me and told me I hadn't asked for boxes. I said I did because we always get this, however the guy giving me the most hassle was too busy sorting out his colleagues previous transaction problem!!! Then another guy said these boxes are expensive we can't just give them out. I said are you serious? I am happy to pay for it. They went on to say yes love next time ask for a box etc etc. By now I said, stuff your food I'll go elsewhere. I went to The Wellfield, better fish and chips and service was excellent! NOTE TO OWNER; invest in better respectful workers and perhaps get your workers to go on some training in customer service. Maybe they might learn a thing or two about respecting women along the way too! Needless to say I won't be going there again! The men are patronising, rude and condescending. Off putting before you even get your food is the people that serve you.

This evening we ordered 2 x fresh large cod and 3 large chips from this awful place and despite the so called glowing reviews it is obvious this place has deteriorated significantly since it changed ownership. The miserable excuse for a serving assistant tried to convince us that the 2 sad looking pieces of cod in the heated display had just been fried but we said we would wait the 10 minutes for fresh fish to be fried. What was eventually presented was absolutely atrocious. The fish was wrapped tightly in paper and predictably when we tried to remove the paper to eat the fish the batter came away. It was only when we saw this pathetic excuse for a fish and chip meal that it became apparent that the server had just arranged for the 2 bits of old fish to be refried and given to us. No other customers had entered into the shop and we noticed when leaving the shop that the fish had disappeared from the heated display unit. The chips were just awful and lacked taste - again it was obvious these were not fresh. A complete waste of £23.20p and lesson learnt for us not to visit this place again. We would suggest that you avoid at all costs - there are much better places in Cardiff where you can get proper fish and chips which is fresh, tasty and served up to a high quality.

Food is always nice, pretty decent for takeaway fish and chips, but they increased their prices by 45% in the last month. £7.35 for a small fish and chips, which was £5 just 2-3 weeks ago. Too bad, it used to be a decent value for money option.

I been going here for the last 30 years and I can't believe how bad it's got. This was the place we all went to when we were kids and now it's a joke. The food is terrible and overpriced and the next generation staff are just as bad, plz bring back the boss guys coz I know there still there. It makes me sad to see a shop this bad

Visited this evening for my tea, I ordered chips, curry sauce and jumbo sausage. The jumbo sausage was very salty and the chip were stale and very dry. I paid almost £6 for the meal and at first the server gave me a scoop of chips. Im not one for normally complaining but this was so poor quality I have to mention something.

Have used this Fish & Chip shop for many years but a good few recent times have been a hit and miss affair. Something of this nature would not have happened in the 80s as the same family own this Shop. New younger generation that aren’t as good as their older family at delivering the quality and the service. It’s a great shame because this really was the best around ! Chips were Ok but the two pieces of large cod well one was def not a large but that was not the worst it was saturated with oil dreadful overcooked it looked like. Mine was a large but only slightly better cooked. Covid has been dreadful for all of us and I genuinely have felt sorry for businesses of this type ! But now we are coming out the other side don’t rip us off with substandard food that cost £20 your relatives would never have served up such a thing!

Albany fish bar is excellent. Superb fish and chips and a range of other takeaway foods. Prices are reasonable and the hygiene excellent. The staff are friendly, what more could anyone want? This place has won many awards for their fish and chips, deservedly so in my opinion.

The chips in the takeaway is more expensive than some nice restaurants what worse is chips are soggy and the fish was soggy too. Never go back

Just bought fish and chips. My child was eating it when he found a long hair in the chips. I mean eww and no it wasn't my hair as he opened it and started eating it and straight away first piece of chips he touched had hair on it. I made him hold it just to take a picture. Had to throw the whole food out and really couldn't be bothered to go back and get another. So disappointed. 6.90 down the bin

Ordered 3 fish an chips and they were all vile. I was so suprised as they were cooked fresb but the batter was rock hard an very little fish. Sadly wont be going here again

the burger meal I bought last cost me as a diarrhea and food poisoning, I won't suggest anyone albany fish bar, as they don't have right to play people health, specially in covid era. You need to service the food as clean as food regulations require from anyone

Big disappointment of the day. Due to save my time I had made order for fish and chip by phone an hour earlier. The guy answer me plenty available just come and pick at any time. When I got there to pick the fish and chip, there was only a very small fish left as I wanted two. I have asked to the guy I have ordered earlier, he answer me to wait another 10 minutes, where as I did not have time to wait than I had to take one only instead. The amount chip also not as standard, it was way less then anywhere else. Taste was not good. Fish was fully with bones. Most I was disappointed by the guy who served me was totally rude the way he talked to me, there was no any politeness. I will never order and have fish and chip from this shop anymore.

Awful quality. I live around the corner and ordered after a long day at work, chips where lukewarm at best and the "cheese" wasnt melted as one would expect a cheesy chips to be. DONT ORDER.

COMPLETELY DISORGANISED! This is the third time we have ordered via Uber Eats and frankly we will NEVER ORDER from here AGAIN! NO ORDER DELIVERED. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE and NO FOOD.... Yet we were STILL CHARGED for food which not only NEVER left the establishment, but after calling several times - when they eventually picked up the phone - they then LIED to us! No Apology with ZERO Customer Service SKILLS!

Not sure what's happened but my last 2 orders with them via uber eats has messed up and both times I get conflicting info. Driver assigned, drives to my home, says albany fish bar didn't give him my order, he cancels order, I call albany fish bar who say as it was over 45 mins they cancelled the order and no driver assigned. This was a lie and the same one they told me last time, a driver was assigned, no order given to him and HE cancelled the other while I was on the door with him, I even saw the notification come through when he did it. I used to love this place, been going 10 years but no more. They must have new management but I've go to wellfield fish bar instead, I tried them and it was delicious.

Awesome chipshop. Best around in my opinion and its not too expensive. Large chips, 2 fish, 2 jumbo sausages, 2 cans and a pot of curry was around £16. A large chips easily fed 2 adults and 2 children.

BEST SERVICE EVER!!! We had a missing order from our meal, and Uber Eats did absolutely NOTHING about it after an hour of waiting... I rang up and an amazing worker (unfortunately didn't grab their name!) Personally delivered us our missing food!! Thank you so much for saving the night. Really disappointed with the quality of my order. We ordered a "large" cod box which had a handful of chips and the cod wasn't that nice. The curry sauce add on was missing from the order. The onion bhaji order was foul and inedible. The chicken curry also had bones in. Won't bother ordering from here again. Complete waste of money.

Would give this place a 0 if possible rubbish customer service staff barely speak a word of English and the food is massively over priced for how poor the quality of food is 4.50 for soggy chips avoid at all cost much better takeaway food in the area for a much better price

I'm quite saddened to have to write this review because this is a good fish bar. But I've just opened my cod box to find that there are multiple pieces of what appear to be blue plastic inside my fish. Please see the attached image. I had to keep picking these pieces of plastic out from the flesh whilst eating it. I'm not sure if this is some kind of non-biodegradable plastic which the fish ingested but it was quite alarming to see it in my food.

Soggy, greasy batter that stuck to the paper and peeled off the fish as it was unwrapped. Tasteless, overcooked fish. Limp chips that stuck together in a greasy lump. Just awful on every level.

Long-standing fish and chip shop. Their chips are always excellent (probably best in Cardiff), and the fish is good.

I order several times always comes in time. Today I ordered it should have arrived between 21.30 and 22.00, it's 22.55 and they didn't even answer the phone calls. very disappointed and hungry.

Disgusted ordered food payed for driver couldn't find me for half an hour or more when eventually did I said take it back I'm not having cold food if drivers don't know where there going don't send em and 8 tryed ringing the shop to complain but they won't answer wots that telling you they havnt had descent y to call me well I'm going there tomorow get my money back and piece of my mind

We came here on a whim after spending the evening in the Bay. When we arrived the staff were just closing up but they said they had a few things available. As they didn't have much that I liked they offered to cook something fresh before they closed up which was really lovely of them. We chatted to the staff and I noticed their Guinness World Record certificate which we chatted about. The staff were so friendly and for them to cook something fresh for us was above and beyond. We're very glad we decided to come here and we'd definitely come again. Lovely food, very reasonably priced and great conversation :)

Ordered through uber eats and quite disappointed. Ordered 4 cod and 2 large chips. Chips were very soggy and the fish meat was very grey and swimming in grease and very soggy. I mean literally pour the grease out out the bag. Not sure if this is as result of the delivery or as it comes. Shame as reviews got our Hope's up. Unlikely to try again.
