Africfood in Cambridge

We travelled to Cambridge and my young son was extremely keen to try Africfood given the reviews. What a terrible experience. For £7.50 you get one piece of goat ' meat' ( bone surrounded by a minuscule amount of meat) with a lot of rice. He was extremely disappointed and I was kind of furious. This is really a bit of a scam. In a market with lots of amazing food stalls, why would anyone spend their money here for a ridiculous amount of goat curry.

Only one piece of goat meat was in my container. This piece had hardly any meat on it, and was mostly just bone and gristle. At £7.50; what an absolute rip off.

This is my first time having West African food and I am hooked. The vegetarian options are flavorful and filling, which is not always the case in the UK. The mild sauce is to die for! I would definitely buy it if they packaged and sold it. I encourage everyone, especially people from the Caribbean, to try Nigerian cuisine.

I give 2 stars because the seller is positive and friendly and service is generally good, shop is also clean. When it comes to taste, this is definitely NOT authentic Nigerian taste. May be it is perfect for those who have no standards of quality African food, definitely not up to the level of other African restaurants in London. Disappointing and pricey

This place is a hidden gem - we finally tried the restaurant on Newmarket Road after having enjoyed the kiosk on Market Square a number of times. The owner is really friendly and kind, and the food is absolutely delicious. The portions are huge, too - I actually had to say "please, no more!" as she loaded beans onto my plate. We had the chicken in red sauce and the goat in green sauce with rice, beans and plantains. All lovely, but the goat in particular stood out. Very highly recommended.

Africfood is the best stall in market sq by a mile, went to the brick and mortar restaurant on Newmarket rd for the first time this evening and it was even better. The Ayamase is delicious , not as spicy as others I have elsewhere but the flavour is great , the egusi soup with gari was also banging. You can tell the goat is fresh and top quality. The boss lady is lovely, the portions at the gaff were bigger than the market but both venues are very good value . The only way I could see the place could improve is to add more menu items.

Just had a great meal with friends at the Newmarket Rd Africfood. Spicy goat, black beans, jollof rice. Very friendly too. We will be back soon.

Very nice food, and friendly service (we went to the Newmarket Road restaurant). They told us what each dish was like, and were very helpful. It certainly enhanced our trip to Cambridge.

We visited Cambridge and decided to check out this restaurant based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews on trip advisor. I'm glad to say that we were not disappointed at all. The food was good, the restaurateur was very warm and friendly to us.

The food was very tasty and the service friendly. Sunkanmi who I believe is the owner , was welcoming and friendly. Nice little restaurant for some interesting Nigerian food, highly recommend it. 👍👍👍

My friend and I went in for the first time the other day and loved it. Food was amazing. We tried the different Goat curries with all the trimmings. The service was lovely as well, as the owner was incredibly warm and kind.

I had African food for the first time in africfood last week and I'm hooked now. I'm very picky with food and I absolutely love it. Their dishes as flavoursome, the portions are generous and it's also healthy like home cooked food. It's a family run business so I'm very happy to write them this review and I look forward to the next time I go there.

I do love a spicy goat dish. All the food I tried here was good, but I particularly liked the spicy goat, the black eyed beans and the fried plantain. Highly recommended to anyone with a taste for Nigerian/African dishes.

I’ve just been for lunch as a Friday treat and ordered the spicy goat stew. It was so tasty and the fried banana was freshly made. I can’t recommend it enough.

I had visited this market stall a few times now. Bought the jollof rice with plantains, and because I like spicy food, tried the green goat curry. It was different to the usual Asian curries but tasty and yes, peppery hot. Lady serving was friendly and the pieces of meat were very generous, enough to share. thank you.

Visited the stall in the market and was served by a delightful young lady called Femi. Huge portions. Good value and food was delicious! Highly recommend.

For our first taste of Nigerian cuisine, this was excellent. Generous portions of jollof rice with goat curry and fried plantain for under a tenner, what's not to like? Well worth a visit if you're in the area and you want something tasty in a hurry!

We arranged for a few tasters of all on offer, the lad packed them to take back to Coventry who was very helpful and gave good advice Thank you!.All in all excellent a real eye opener..a truly delicious gem! Well done to you all!

I visited the location in the food tent, the lady was wonderful, kind and helpful. One of my goals for my 10 days in the UK was to eat as much good Pakistani, Indian and African food as possible. I LOVE curry, with goat curry being my favorite. I have eaten a many many restaurants, and the #1 Indian food in my travels was in United States, Arizona in Mesa at Guru Palace.

Jollof rice with goat or chicken - tasty and spicy and all round wonderful. The lovely lady remembered me on my second visit, and she will certainly see me more often.

We really enjoyed our meal at the Newmarket road restaurant. We both had one of the vegan options which was the Veggie Mix including plantain and yam along with the yummy in-house spicy tomato sauce! It was delicious, healthy, home-made food and the lady chef is delightful.

I ordered the goat stew with spicy sauce and jollof rice and it's honestly what dreams are made of. Atmosphere is excellent with friends, and the person there is super nice. Definitely recommend.

Really awesome food! Home away from home..... My EBA & Vegetable was refreshing. Unfortunately, I won't be around much longer to enjoy this Nigerian delicacy. You may want to make it a bit more spicy as it is our style.

Went after the cinema on a weekday, greeted by the lovely, smiley staff and then served delicious veggie mix. We've got a real soft spot for African food after years in south London so really pleased when this place opened. Thoroughly recommend it.

I hadn't ever really tried African food before but oh my goodness is it delicious! The stews and plantains and rice and beans...the value for your money as well! The portion was wonderfully large and you can even get a student discount! I love this place! Can I give it more than 5 stars for value?

We've gone to the new restaurant in Newmarket road twice and the food it's truly amazing. We had never tried nigerian food before and now we would not live without it.

I had the iyan (pounded yam) and efo egusi. Tasty.....certainly different from any efo egusi I've ever eaten.

This is a lovely little cafe at the bottom of Newmarket Road, the owners also run a market stall in town. You simply must come along and try this food for a new and different experience.

Personal my favorite was the jellof rice with the curry goat. Reasonable price and just so delicious aswell

My boyfriend and I discovered this place when driving alone New Market road and decided to give it a chance and we loved it. We have been back several times and are happy to have an alternative for take aways from the standard Indian and Chinese food. The spicy goat and chicken stew are really tasty and we always get given an extra helping of plantain.

I thoroughly enjoyed the food I ordered (along with bits of my friends’ food!). Everything has an authentic flavour to it.

The mixed veg meal is a generous plate of beans, plantains, rice, squash and chilli sauce - very yummy and filling, I'm a definite repeat customer!

Loved the food, service and general feel. The owner is very pleasant and has the biggest smile on her face, will definitely go again, and since ordered for delivery and it came in a timely manner. 10/10

We visited the AfricFood cafe on Newmarket Road, and had the yam, beans, plantain and rice, served with a delicious red spicy sauce. The surroundings are fairly basic, but food this good can't get less than five stars!

I visited the new Africfood Resturant on Newmarket Road in Cambridge and it was lovely. Fantastic good wholesome food. Staff was very friendly, restaurant was clean. Really good portions of food. Really the best in town. If you’re interested in giving Nigerian cuisine a try Come and visit the resturant you will be blown away. Or if you’re away from home and you just need a good soulful African meal, I mean a really good Nigerian meal… like mum used to make then this is the spot. Absolutely perfect.

When you come to Africfoods, make sure you come on an EMPTY stomach- food babies are known to occur here! The hostess is very friendly and definitely gives you your money’s worth. The goat and spinach stew I had was succulent and and flavoursome. This was accompanied by some jollof rice with a bit of chilli (for a very nice kick) and the plantain (a very generous helping I might add), balanced the savoury-ness of the dish beautifully. The end result was a wonderful complexity of flavours and a very full belly. Definitely worth visiting often :)

Africfood had a lot to live up to after I read the reviews on here. Even so, their food blew me away! Every bit got more delicious than the last and the portion was plentiful. My only regret is that I don't have a second stomach when I visit! Seriously check this place out. You will not regret it.

I tried Africfood a couple of times and it's always great, now they have opened one on Newmarket Road and it's as good as the one in the market. Lovely food, friendly lady so it is a pleasure to go there and have an amazing meal.

I have never tried African food and this was my first time trying it and wow it was absolutely amazing! The spicy goat full of flavor and tender, Jallof rice unbelievably flavorsome and I would highly recommend this place!

Sorry I only have a photo of the empty box. Was too excited to tuck into food because of its 5 star reviews. True to its ratings on Tripadvisor, the spicy goat curry was 5 star in terms of flavour. Portions were generous, and the lady serving the food was really nice.

I have tried Nigerian food before but this takes it to an entire different level. The portion and the price is fantastic and the meat is cooked so well. Chicken with Spinach has its own flavours with the Jellof rice is something I would recommend anyone to try ! The spices, services and especially the fried plantain is a scale above the rest. Fresh food and service with a smile :)

I've been coming here for more than a year now and it's definitely made my time in Cambridge much better! I love plantains, yams and goat but they tend to uncommon at food places in the City; this stall does them the best.

The best food available in Cambridge hands down. The veggie mix has black eyed beans, jollof rice, fried plantain and mashed yams, and you can have the spicy or non-spicy tomato sauce on top. If Michelin guides weren't so up themselves then this place would have two or maybe three michelin stars. Also, portion sizes are just right. Came here with my soul dude, Tim, who had the goat, and he claims it is the best goat he's ever had. Great service and value for money.

I visit this great food stall in Cambridge market that sells authentic African food. I get a takeaway curried goat which is historic. Absolutely the best tasting food available freshly cooked. Very friendly service with a smile. Highly Recommend

I'd like to echo what has already been said earlier in the comments. The lady working at the stall is really friendly and helpful and recognises you if you've been before, which is really nice. There is a variety of food available and she can make up a vegan box for you to take away, with such delights as rice, beans, plantain and chilli sauce. The portions are hearty and even if you go during your lunch break from work with a full afternoon ahead, it keeps you going. I thoroughly recommend multiple visits!

I came here with a friend who is living in Cambridge and recommended it. Having had a pet Billy goat a child, I was initially reluctant to try the goat curry. However I was pleasantly surprised! It was so delicious and spicy it was a joy to eat and I felt amazing after. The lady who served us was really lovely and friendly and the portion was massive so a steal at that price point! I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Cambridge.

If you're after African food in Cambridge, this is by far the best place to be. The food tastes great and the portions are generous, not forgetting the great service. In comparison with other African food places in Cambridge, this is great value for money. I ordered Jollof rice and a spicy goat stew which I can honestly say was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. It made for a tasty, filling lunch and I'm certainly going back! I highly recommend Africfood to everyone.

I stayed in Cambridge for over 3 years and went quite often to the market place for a quick lunch. There is something for every taste, but most times I went to Africfood. She made in the past a delicious fish dish as well, which she stopped doing, but if you tell her in advance, she will prepare it for you for the next day! Super awesome service!

I ordered the goat and spinach over the jollof rice with a few extras and red hot sauce. It was a chilly and windy day. It hit the spot perfectly. All goat pieces were tender and flavorable to the max. The spinach was exotically delicious as were the other condiments. She filled my carton at least two inches above the rim. I received both quantity and quality from a real chef. The best food I have sampled at the Market.

Wonderful Nigerian food! I eat there every weekend and I love the spicy chicken, plantains and lovely jollof rice, and my boyfriend loves the goat and the fish as well! Good value for such a great food. Would totally recommend if you're in Cambridge.

I stopped by here whilst wandering around Cambridge Market. The food was really tasty. I had jollof rice with spicy chicken and plantain. Hubby had the curried goat, which he said was delicious. The service was friendly and knowledgeable about gluten free. Great place and good value too.

the dishes served were simply amazing. ranging from all types of assorted meats, to (moderately) spicy and tantalising vegetable sauces. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who either desires to experience the gratifying uniqueness of Nigerian food, or is an experienced connoisseur of food and wants his/her tastebuds stimulated.

Our portions had very little meat inside ( plenty of bones ) . Meat was ok but the rest ( yam , rice , beans ) was dissapointing and we didnt finish our food. Lady selling food is friendly . Well maybe our expectations were too high after seeing so many positive reviews.

If I had to recommend food to anyone in Cambridge it has to be this store.

It's a wet October Monday in Cambridge, and so I hoofed it round to the market for some delectable goat and spinach stew, jollof rice, beans and fried plantain, and it was just gorgeous. I am now well insulated from the cold and rain. The portions are huge, I always think that I won't be able to eat all this, and I always do. I recommend, wholeheartedly. *contented sigh* :)

The food is delicious and comes at a great price with card payments also accepted. I wasn't expecting this quality of African food at a market in Cambridge but this certainly surpassed any expectations I had.

The food was just gorgeous. I keep going back for more. Recommend the mixed veggie dish, but you make sure you go earlier in the day before they run out of it! Card payments are accepted too.

Seeing this market stall reach the heady heights of number one in the hit parade we were keen to give it a try. I was slightly surprised though that we were the only customers there during our approach when other stores seemed to have a few customers? It was lunch time.

Africfood is one of the few places in Cambridge which has good African food! Lovely service and a brilliant place to get lunch; I'm eating goat, jollof, yams and plantain almost every day!
