Abbey Fisheries in Selby

Ordered here tonight for convenience. 90 mins it took. Food items missing and wrong. Called shop to be told if I leave my name I can get it free next time or go and pick it up. No apology or anything. Multiple staff too busy at back door to help. Chose to go pick it up as the missing item was a main part of the meal, returned home to not just the rest of the meals cold but apparently the scampi looks and tastes like chicken nuggets. I would like the manager to message me back to arrange a refund! (But I'm not holding my breath) # Ordered by own app and doesn't allow refunds!

Wow when they say homemade Yorkshire Fishcakes .. they mean fish cake .. I've had many over the years but never with so much fish in them ...fantastic 😊 Jim brown Hillam near Selby

Unfortunately I can't race about this place. The two ladies serving on my visit were miserable ..they tried to make small talk but you could tell they really didn't want to. The portions were decent but the fish was greasy which made the chips taste fatty. We asked for a bag of scraps...but these were dripping with fat. Price point...about the average price in Selby but the quality is average too.

Popped in at 17.30 today for sausage & chips. The sausage was nice but the chips were awful. We couldn't decide if they had been sat there for ages or reheated. They were hard and not very nice to eat. Its the 2nd time we have visited ( the first time the chips were nice hot and freshly cooked) sorry there wont be a 3rd time

I bought 4 meals from this place, 3 meals were OK and the other meal had a hair in the chips

I ordered large battered sausage and chips when I got home there was a long hair in my chips? I'll not use again

Ordered online to pick up and went to pick up and they forgot to cook fish had to wait when got them home chips were not nice and felt they had been warmed up normally had great service and food from here so very disappointed

I was SO disappointed I have had fish and chips from here many times and always good but yesterday the fish was terrible I had to hunt for the fish through a really thick batter It was like a sponge cake on the inside

I come in this dinnertime and the gravy was like treacle it was so thick, its not normally really nice, but I'm afraid not today, I will try again, but if its still the same, never again

Very impressed. The fish was crispy and fresh, the chips were soft and fluffy and the presentation was outstanding. Even the staff were very smily and chatty today. Yes the food 9.5/10 presentation 9/10 customer service 10/10 price 7/10 (Yes I know... cost of living chrisis, price hikes) haha Overall review 8.5/10. Experiance 5 star!

I very rarely have fish and chips as I am usually disappointed but got some for myself and hubby (who is even more fussy than me). Well were we impressed? absolutely fantastic, the batter was spot on, really crispy and no grease in sight, the chips were cooked to perfection. Definitely the best fish and chips in Selby and far beyond. Will not be a stranger to this place anymore.

Really hard work here,it’s like going back 30 years the organisation is shockingly out of date and they need to restructure,for them!have fish ready,5 at a time have sausage in batter ready 10 at a time ! Have someone wrapping the food that is fast and competent fast turnover,more money and better organised. Good food and nice owner otherwise I would have gave it 1 star 👍

Delivery 15 minutes late who cares i dont,lots of things can happen for this to occur traffic,weather,staff shortages.What i do care about is when i order 2 X Regular Fish and Chips,1 Large Fish and Chips and im missing a Regular Fish and Chips and the delivery is late.What i do care about is when i order 1 of each type of Curry Sauce and get instead 1 Curry Sauce,1 Gravy and 1 Mushy Peas.Unlike grocery home deliveries i didnt tick no box that stated "substitutes allowed or just send me what you want".It was a small order of 3 meals and 2 condiments and that could not even be delivered correctly,somebodies got to beable to read orders correctly once received and make sure what has been ordered is in the bags before setting off to the customers home.From Damon Moffatt.

Great fish and chips from HERE with friendly staff SUPERB

If the review was just for the food it would be 5 stars, no complaints there at all. Freezing cold Monday night and it took a good 40 minutes to be served. There were about 4/5 people in front of us, one being an elderly gentleman who only wanted 2x fish and chips. One customer was served at a time which meant a lot of standing around waiting for certain orders which was frustrating when there were fish under the lights that could have been served to someone else in the queue. At one point the queue stretched down the street and some just gave up and left. I understand times are hard with covid and staffing issues but there just didn’t seem to be anything in place to get customers seen quickly. I should have said something to the lady serving but she was nice and did eventually apologise for the wait. It’s a missed opportunity because on a Monday night nowhere else is open so there’s the potential to get lots of new customers who regularly use other chippies.

First of all the food was excellent and a good price, which I suppose is the main point. So why not 5 stars? I did not appreciate being told off, with a harsh tone, for being the 3rd adult in the shop when COVID restrictions limited to 2! I was happy to go back outside and wait thinking I had made a mistake, but when I checked there were No signs informing customers of this limit. How can you comply when the limit isn't posted? It was not my mistake, I had not missed the sign as I initially assumed was the case. The harsh challenge regarding occupancy was followed up with similar behaviour; I felt uncomfortable with the way the younger staff were being treated and spoken to by the lady whom I assume is the manager or owner. It was really busy, bonfire night, and they had a full rail of Internet orders to deal with. But civility costs nothing! It is not nice to see such behaviour and be an ineffective bystander witness. There wasn't opportunity to say anything at the time, nor do I believe it would have been well recieved, but I hope this review causes some reflection and subsequent improvement in the staff working conditions.

The fish and chips are lovely, however waiting time is dreadful. Surely, at busy times ,several fish should be put in to fry rather than waiting until the customer gets to the front of the queue and asking what they want and then putting it in to fry. Something needs to change or business will be lost. I stuck it out , when I went a couple of weeks ago, however several people gave up in frustration and went elsewhere.

This is one of the best chippy I've ever had the staff were friendly and the food is perfect The next time I'm back in Selby this is the chippy for me

I live across country where fish & chips are not cooked properly anyway, and I am looking forward to my next opportunity to buy the excellent food from this fine shop.

Visited here on Friday evening and had a fish butty, it was really nice and tasty and would definitely come here again. Friendly staff were getting though the queue dispite having power issues. Lovely. See you again.

Fish and chips was good. Cooked fresh from when we went in good wait time also, nice and short. The only thing is was that it was extremely greasy but what can you expect from fish and chips!

Freshly fried fish with a decent portion of chips. Due to Covid had to stand outside as only 2 allowed inside at any time. Parking available outside the shop

Me and my partner have been coming into abbey fisheries for a long time as we always enjoyed the fish and chips,However we will not be returning ever again there is a older blonde lady who batters the fish not sure what her name is but she has always been very rude when we have gone in there.Today i went in there and asked for a large battered haddock and chips amongst other things when it come to me paying they had served me a regular battered haddock then she denied i asked for a large haddock and said that i would just have to eat that as she has already cooked it now,i asked to change it and she said no and that the fish is made to order she looked and talked to me like dirt.ive never known anyone so rude before how she works in customer service is beyond me.such a shame because i used that place rugarly and by the sounds of it other people have made complaints about how rude she is too.

Over priced 2 fish and chips and 2 cans of tango for £14:20 was not nice fish and chips and very little food for £14:20

The best fish & Chips in the known universe. I have been travelling here every week for a few years at least. The staff are lovely, the service is tip top and nothing would entice me away. Ive tried the other chippys close by and they don't come close ...... the new owners have been accommodating and allow us to phone in an order for collection as we travel quite far just to visit Abbeys. Keep it up

I have tried every fish and chip shop within a 7 mile Radius of Riccall and never been totally happy with them but there is one that I have never tried until tonight abbey fisheries in Selby city centres. I can honestly say they are the best fish and chips I have tasted in a very long time and also the two young ladies that served me where a delight 👍

Just what you need after a hard day at work, fish & chips washed down with a good bottle of red wine..

Been using this place for a good few years and been happy with it. Recently they've started doing the 'Just Eat' food order app for people to order online. Ony last 3 visits I've waited longer than ever before (+30 mins with only 2 people in front of me) to get served when I've visited the shop due to the fact that the staff have no choice but to prioritise the online orders that are coming through. The staff are overworked because of this and clearly all the customer service I was used to has now gone as they are trying to keep up with the orders whilst delivery staff are waiting for them to prepare the orders for them to take. This now means that anyone visiting the shop are being put last. Really disappointed but not the fault of the staff who are lovely.

Vile food! Gravy tasted like powder! Ended up throwing my food away because all I could taste was gravy powder🤮 I won’t be going there again!

Staff are nice and the price is ok. Correct healthy adult portions (normally expect bigger from fish and chip shop). Grate gravy and batter although didn't stick to my sausage very well. We will use again but not pulling me back for more right away.

This chippy was the best ive spent alot of time and money in here but since it burnt to the ground and the two youngs girls have moved on it is shocking service and the two old bats who work there are so arogant its unbelieveable but anyway ill be taking my custom to the codfather to be fair its a better chippy all round now its a shame i used to tell all about abbey fishries never again !!!!!

1st time trying this shop after friends telling me how good it was .Well I wasn’t disappointed .Never had batter so light and fluffy .Staff was very friendly chatting and laughing with customers even though they was very busy.Think the ladies was called lel and les .My children ate all the chips which is a first for them .Would highly recommend this fish and chip shop .Will always be my favourite fish and chip shop from now on .

Incredible ! As good as any fish and chips I have ever eaten. Yorkshire fish and chips cooked in dripping cannot be beaten, and that's what you have here.

Lengthy wait for fish to be cooked which may be why it was verging on being burnt , both fish were the same, tough and dry like cardboard, wasted our money and they are not cheap. Chips scrappy and had a chlorine tint

We went to Abbey Fisheries, because it’s been a few years, since we last went, anticipating, it may have improved the fish and chips. Sadly not. The taste of the oil, isn’t pleasant and the fish isn’t nice, thick and succulent. We live in hope, that one day Selby generally, will be like it used to be, with decent fish and chips!

Brilliant staff Paula and Maxine were brilliant even offered me a chocolate whilst I waited for my fish. Always recommend this fish shop to friends and family. Best chippy In town.
